My 12 year old daughter wants to buy a digital camera with the £140.00
she has left over from Xmas but is unsure what to buy.

    Can anyone suggest something suitable?

    TIA

I've no idea it it's any good.

If possible I'd go for a camera that takes standard batteries, so she
can carry spares without spending a fortune.

    seems to be the concensus.

Some of the Cybershots look nice, but are overpriced. Stick with an
    Ixus.

The camera mags rated the Lumix top in compact tests something over a year
ago so I doubt you can go wrong with one.

  10. Agreed. I loved every ixus I had. My last one is still going strong,
despite the current users determination to abuse it.

Oh and for batteries, 7dayshop are where it's at. Or were, last time I checked.

I would happily buy another Ixus. Our 7 was a major factor in my
    purchase of an EOS 450.

As for batteries, they last *forever* IME

It's funny, I've gone that way and now going back (sort of).

Ixus 300 to Ixus 50 to EOS 400d to (bonus permitting) Canon S90.

I need another compact because carting the SLR everywhere is a pain,
but I want the control of an SLR which the S90 gives in an Ixus-sized
    package.

  17. Anything by Nikon on Canon, really.

I was going to say: "Used digital SLR" until I recalled that sourcing a
decent used D50 and a couple of lenses for Number One Son cost over
    £300.

  18. Search eBay for pattern batteries and click 'buy now'. I have a Chinese
pattern battery for my D200 (cost about a tenner against Nikon's £40)
and two ditto for my Coolpix (two for a tenner against Nikon's £25-30
    for one battery).

Sure, they don't last as long as the OE batteries, but they're cheap and
they do the job as a back-up.

I'd go with Panasonic myself - because they use Leica optics.
