FOAK: Camcorders from the USA

SWMBO has ordered a camcorder (what with the sprog about due and that). Now,
what I know about camcorders can be written on the back of a small postage
stamp, but I do know that they are cheaper in the States,

Is there any problem in buying a digital camcorder from Merker and using it
in Blighty? I know that they use a different TV system there but would that
affect uploading to the computer, and thence to a DVD for playback on my TV?

    Anybody know? Anybody care?

    TIA

    No or depends.
    No or depends or yes

What a stupid fucking question to ask of the FOAK

Depends. Discussions as to whether small furry creatures in marinated
in certain exotic spices should be spit or oven roast has been the cause
of a death threat or three. Debates as to whether the same small furry
creatures make good pets have not received as much popular attention.

    On anything in particular?
Well, yes, it was stated as a challenge
They make crap pets, but who can afford the sellotape?

There's not "meant to be" there is a connection. Next question.

More or less everything in the chain.

Unless you buy a camera that does real world as well as merkin at the
setting of an option, or have a dvd player that will play merkin, it all
rather depends where you make the decision to convert. Things like this
are going to affect your choices when it comes to selection of the
hardware and or software and I don't think there is any need to discuss
any competence you may have which would help towards making it all work
    in harmony.

You could have done with a video camera 9 months ago, because
otherwise you're gonna forget what it's like.

  8. That was in singularly poor taste. Well done. :)

  9. I was brunged one from the US as a present a couple of years ago. It works
fine. These things are as 'international' as laptops. Just do it!

Given that it's a digital camcorder, I'll assume that it has a firewire
port. In which case, capturing on your PC will be a piece of piss.
Editing and DVD authoring will depend on the software supporting NTSC,
which most packages should do. DVD playback will depend on how you've got
things wired up and if your player supports NTSC. If it does, and you're
using an RGB socket on your TV - it should be fine, otherwise your TV will
    need to support NTSC.
