  1. I don't really care TBH.

  2. I was trying to make the point that 'working with computers' does not
automatically mean that you know the jargon of all parts of the
    knowledge.
It's information that you need to put in on the page in the router
setup that defines your DSL account. So it may well be useful (most
UK-supplied DSL routers don't have that info automatically).

Sure - it *may* not be useful or needed - on the other hand it may have
been. It only took me about 30 seconds to make the original post so I
thought it was worthwhile. Obviously I was wrong!

But I'll shut up now or you'll start telling me I'm tedious again.

  3. I know *lots* of support people who have done support for a very long
time who have never done anything remotely to do with networks other
than ask the network engineer for the values of the default gateway and
    DNS servers..

I was (briefly) one of them - then I decided to work with networks and
    servers rather than people[1]..

    Phil.

[1] First and second level support sucks. At least when you tell a
router to do something it does it without complaining..

  4. None of this is 'networks'. Networks is setting up routers and firewalls
and the like. (and even the firewalls bit is debatable).
    The famous doubleact!

IBM don't do "network horsepower" anymore[1], you'll be wanting some
outsourced AT&T network monkeys for that.

    Ouch, those hockey masks hurt!

  11. Really? So why do people have the title "network engineer" (ie - me
about 3 jobs ago) spend all their time looking after just those things?

And in most companies people who do desktop support (which may involve
simple connectivity tests like ping) have no access to any of the
'network stuff' in case they break it..

And 'setting connection strings' isn't networks either. It's
application support/programming (unless you want to count doing a
    simple ODBC query as 'networks'.

Setting up a webserver probably doesn't count as networks either.

In short - you are talking out of your backside.
