I was wondering why the performance was pretty much the same as
    before. :)

heh. It didn't make much sense to me, and I work with computers for a
    living.

  11. 'Computers' != 'networks'..

VC = 'virtual circuit' - used in conjunction with VPI (Virtual Path
Identifier) to define the circuit. In the UK VC usually is set to 38
    and the VPI to 0.

Which is again fairly meaningless unless you know anything about ATM
(or packet-switched networks which also use virtual circuits).

Phil, did you ever consider that as a project manager Champ doesn't
really want to know any of this?

I'd struggle to think of anyone who 'works with computers' (i.e. in
the IT industry) who doesn't also have to deal with circuits.
And back to my original point, that it wasn't much use for SD trying
to get his router to work.

I've worked 'with computers' in IT since 1984 and I've never needed to
deal with, or know anything at all about, circuits.

Weird. I have no idea why I typed 'circuits' there. I meant
    networks.

Spose I'd better live life to the full before alzheimers takes
    complete hold.

I thought you might not have written what you meant!

But it still holds - I don't have to, and never have had to, 'deal'
with networks. That's someone else's job. And, even if I knew what to
do, more and more I find that I won't have admin rights in order to do
    it anyway.
I recommend riding a motorbike. Fast.

oh come on. Never pinged a server? Never wrestled with a connection
string for a database? Never created a web service over http?

I suppose he could be a Windows Mobile developer.

I had a (for me, slightly surreal) conversation with such a chap a
little while back - someone who I've known for years, and has worked
in various IT jobs for a similar length of time to me. Turns out - and
I know you'll find this hard to believe - he'd never used an RDBMS,
and didn't really know what they were for.

Apparently, in the Windows Mobile world, all data is just held in flat
text files, and you write your own indexing in the application.

Yes, but if it fails, I am usually unable to do anything about it.

    No.

Maybe we're having issues over what you mean by 'deal'. Pinging a
server is not 'dealing' with a network; troubleshooting & resolving
    problems is. IMO, of course.

What I meant by 'dealing' was essentially 'using', and knowing when
you have a problem. And knowing enough about the problem to get
    someone to fix it.
