    I find myself out of my depth yet again . . . . . .

Ta very muchley for the BitTorrents heads up - excellent! All working in
that department and totally abusing BT bandwidth.

    So far so good.

Trying to convert and write the avi files to DVD is another matter - I
always get to around 90 to 98% through the conversion process and my machine
    freezes.

    I'm running a 1.6 processor & 256 mb ram, loads of HD space - would I be
right in assuming this isn't enough for the job? Would additional ram solve
the problem or is it time for an upgrade, which I don't really want or need
(skint), as this appears to be the only thing I can't do.

You could buy the DVD - much cheaper than a new PC... :)

You could just buy a DVD player that will play divx files.

    Nope.
Being able to fill a DVD with half a dozen films as avi files is quite
    satisfying

Or buy a DVD player which plays AVIs. I just bought a Philips something
for about 40 quid which plays .MPG, DivX and Xvid, as well as
    conventional DVDs of course.

  9. yer could get a TV out vid card and plug it into the telly...allowing
you to play movies with the computer and see them on the telly
then there is no conversion neccessary
