Tyres are one of the main reasons for not really wanting to ride there
& back - we'd have to get new ones fitted before coming home given the
mileage we're doing. Plus we'd still have to get the luggage there
somehow, along with several sets of quiet pipes for the trackday.

Book the tyre fitting ahead with a local dealer.

Turn your underpants every few days.

Get some quiet pipes for the road you noisy fuckers.

    Job done.

Ah. Depends on the licence requirements. If you passed your test before
1 January 1997, no problem. Later than that: probably a problem.

    "Subcategory C1:
Medium sized goods vehicles 3.5 - 7.5 tonnes MAM

Subcategory C1 vehicles may be coupled with a trailer up to 750kgs MAM
allowing a combination of up to 8.25 tonnes MAM."

However, if you're talking about your Jeep: "Category B: Vehicles up to
3.5 tonnes MAM and with up to 8 passenger seats may be coupled with a
trailer up to 750kgs MAM (allowing a combined weight up to 4.25 tonnes
MAM) OR a trailer over 750kgs MAM provided the MAM of the trailer does
not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle, and the
combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes MAM" (MAM = Maximum Authorised
    Mass)

They'll need new tyres fitted during the week if we ride them / no way
to carry luggage / no way to carry 5-6 sets of quiet exhausts + spares
for the trackday we're doing while there / it might just simply be
    cheaper doing it another way.

I did ride there & back last year, taking 2 days on the way down &
Basel to Swindon in one hit on the way back. But the others took a
borrowed van & trailer so could take all my luggage.

I think everyone's got European breakdown cover so that shouldn't be a
problem. One bike did blow a plug out a couple of years ago in
Switzerland, & someone from the MV factory came to collect it, took it
back to the factory & fitted a new head - all for free!

But then I'll have to pay for my tyres...

  9. last time I took the van on a ferry (Jan this year ) cost £480.00 Weymouth
to St Malo fast ferry has a 3.5 tonne weight limit and a 3 metre height
limit 4 hour journey , slow ferry no height limit or weight limit 12 / 14
    hour journey

    trailers charged extra

They had a policy of no fuel / oils in the back of the vehicle ( empty fuel
tank , engine oil is ok) and you will need a declared valuation for the
stuff in the back of the van

There is also something about being able to tow if you passed after 97. I
passed after 97 and have since done my C1, but still can't drive something
over 3.5 tonne with a trailer. I think you need either C1+ or maybe E1 (1).

    (1) might have mad that catagory up.

  16. Just to add to your misery, if you'd even considered using a freight
forwarder etc, you're going to run into problems - .ch is non-eu so
you'll have to a shed load of temporary importation documents etc in
order to avoid having to pay tax and duty etc.

I'd think that hiring (or buying and then flogging on afterwards) some
lardy diesel tour bus is probably they easiest all round soluion, with
the added bonus of doing a beer/fag run on the way home.

Commiserations/congratulations dependent on attitude towards it. That
explains the sudden rush of posts at any rate. Careful now, you'll end
