Anyone know if there is a lookup tool where I can find out what
institution a particular sort code belongs to?

I know who it should be, if it's isn't then quite a bit of my money
has wound up in the wrong account.

Hopefully it's just taking time to process and I have nothing to worry
about, despite it going from my current account and not yet appearing
    in my VISA account.

you mean like the "UK clearings directory 2004 - formely sorting code
    numbers directory" ?
    That sort code refers to
    The Royal Bank of Scotland
    Credit Card Cebtre,
    RBS Advanta Visa Gold.
    0870 7070070

    If that's of any use.

Yup, lovely. Jon B had already sorted me out though with the info I
wanted to hear. Now I just need to shout at banks to find out why
money went from my account on Monday and still hasn't been credited to
my VISA account when it was done by direct transfer.

I think these go through BACS so you are looking at up to 3/4 working
    days.

As I have since found out. It was buried in the help files of my
bank's online banking. Would have been more helpful if it was on the
bill payment page "This payment will take 4 working days to clear".

Still the VISA company have got it now.

Even with the manual karting around of tapes, it should still be
possible to do it next working day ... or the next at the absolute
    outside.
