  1. Ahh. Mine is the 180bhp QS but a late registration (early 2002) model.
    With the red 'i'.

    <touch wood> it's been fine since I bought it back in 05, although I
noticed some dampness behind the passenger (your driver) seat this
afternoon, so I suspect I need to whip the battery out and find the
drain hole that's invariably blocked. *joy*.

I don't think they changed all that much, although the bonnet/boot shapes
    are tweaked considerably.
Ours did something like that back in 08, they ended up replacing the
battery tray because it was warped. Funnily enough, that was my passenger
as well, so I guess the battery is on the side the steering wheel isn't.

It's not been a bad car, now the persistent tracking problem has been
sorted. Although the engine has always been a bit sluggish below 2500RPM,
which is odd considering it's a diesel. Perhaps I should get it chipped.

  3. Yup - most obvious difference, iirc, is the rear lights.
That would make sense, it's quite a tight squeeze in that area of the bulkhead.
That's the downside of a heavy car with a turbo innit.
I would. Just haven't got round to it yet. Extra 45bhp and a smoothed
out map is pretty much ready out of the can these days.

Elly had this issue on her Passat, ask her or Pip about it.

Yeah, yeah. Had/has - it's endemic and chronic.

Not only is the battery a tight squeeze, it's also in a really horrible
location - stretched over the wing with an arm at fullish stretch to
grab it (the other arm braced on the scuttle for leverage).

I fitted a big amp/hour battery of the Leisure variety, because it is a
few mm narrower although a touch taller (so it comes out with fewer
wigglings) - but it has two handles, so I'm not left trying to
fingertip it about at full stretch, which does my back no favours as
    you might assume.

Not quite the nirvana of my memory then.
