Does anybody know much about them? They look pretty decent value for money
and I always considered Asus as a fairly good company, but don't know much
about their laptops. Further, does anybody know if there's a shop in London
selling them, so I could have a look/play with one? Ta.

In my experience, the best are IBM T-series. The best value for money are
Dell Inspiron. Neither are available on the high street, as far as I know.

I had a Dell Inspiron, it worked for about 2 years, and kept on working
after I sold it. After I sold it, I got a G4 iBook and never looked
back. :) The Inspiron was ok, but compared with my iBook, it felt like a
floppy sandwitch by the way it flexed around (as do most Windows laptops
    these days).

I have and have supplied PC Chips laptops. Cheap as chips. Not exactly
fast, but they do exactly what they say on the tin.
Nice screen, and keyboard. Quick enough for this shite.

Someone actually mistook mine for a Vaio......

All laptop keyboards I've had (that's two Compaqs, two Dells, one Sony
and one Evesham) have had to be replaced; I don't think it's
    particular to Sony.

Heh, on my work dell Latitude the only things that are original are the
keyboard and the case. I even had the touchpad do strange things last week

Whereas my persoanl lappy, a pikey Acer seems happy to take loads of
hammer with no problems so far.

Recently? As I've read a few quite good reviews about the M6000N series.

I think we bought the last one two years ago. They were *always* having
bits replaced (screens being a particular issue). And the cases are just
not up to being lugged around, which kind of defeats the object.

One of my colleagues in Germany who spends more time out of the office
than I has an Asus. He thinks it's fine.

Hey, I wouldn't have one if it was my choice either. I like the Toshiba
stuff but we've recently switched to Dell at work.

LOL :) No, it has an aluminium top panel, which is something nice for a
    machine at that price.

TBH I only use it for posting when at home, and network testing when I
rarely need to at clients. To that end I wanted the cheapest machine I
could stick W2k / Linux on, which it does admirably. Plus, if I come off
the bike and destroy it, my insurance co dunt complain tooo much.

What has the O/S got to do with the laptop?

You could run linux on a laptop you know.

Apple just happen to be anti-competitive in that regard.

That would be good, having a version of Windows for Macs and a version
    of OSX for x86.

    I'm sure it's been considered.

As I said though, Apple have a monopoly on their particular system - *if*
they were the dominate platform then I do sometimes wonder if things
wouldn't be rather different in terms of anti-competitive law suits and the
    like.

People would still whinge though - Call them Appl?[1] or something equally
    retarded.

I use OS X, coz it works very well. Linux would work very well too, but
I don't want to loose all my programs and data on OS X.

I thought that was what the darwin project was. I had a copy of Darwin,
but it didn't turn out to be very developed yet.
