I bought 40" of HD loveliness last weekend and, so far, I'm very
impressed even with the standard definition picture. I have the PC
connected via the VGA port, at 1920x1080, for watching Blu-Ray and HD
satellite broadcasts and, to me, that also looks good.

So, am I likely to gain any benefit from spending an arm and a leg on
a DVI-HDMI adapter cable to replace the VGA connection?

The HD version of AnyDVD. I already had the DVD version so paid for
    the upgrade.

  3. Using a(n) HDMI cable makes a world of difference between my PS3 and
DVD player when I hook either up to my TV.

They don't have to be expensive though, I bought cheapies from Amazon.

A ten quid cable is more than sufficient to show a big improvement over VGA

    Huge difference.

    I bought a "1m 50cm PRO-2 HDMI to DVI Cable/Lead v1.3b HD 1080p 5ft"

Even when the resolution is set to 1920x1080?

  8. Compared to whatever cable types I used previously - ie component or
    scart.
Well, that is HD quality, so a digital cable won't lose half of the
data along the way. or something.

HDCP works over DVI (and DisplayPort and GVIF and UDI) as well as HDMI

The only problem we had was with longer runs.
Over 5m with a cable joint we started to get sparklies , but swapping to a
    better quality cable cured that.
On 20m runs we had to use a signal amplifier close to the screen to be able
to get 1080p - without we'd only get 720p with sparklies.

Hah, picked up an adapter cable today and, though set to 1920x1080, the
picture is runs off the edges of the screen and ne combination of
    settings seems to improve matters.

    Arse.

As you say 40" I'm guessing it's a Sony , so you want the "full pixel"
option in the display area setting
