I can't seem to find the setting so that Adobe Reader 9 opens files in
new windows rather than new instances of Adobe Reader 9. Currently, if
I select 10 PDF files and open them I end up with 10 instances of
Adobe Reader 9 running at once.

    Help?

    TIA

Maybe, pre-vista, this will do it

    http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-6230-0.html?forumID=101&threadID=238102&messageID=2324019

Seems that this was too easy and the relevant menus
    have been removed from vista.

Prolly registry fiddling time if you are on vista.

Not the same as Adobe Reader 8 ? - just Edit/Preferences/Documents/
Show each document in its own window (requires restart).?

Glad they stuck to 8 on our new refreshed Vista boxes then. Can you
    downgrade to 8?

I'm seriously considering that at the moment.

Given that both you and Simon have suggested it I'll give it a go and
    see what happens.

    "bloatware" :)

Do you know if it handles .pdf macros (or whatever the correct term
    is)?

I'm afraid not, as I don't really know what you're talking about :)

<g> Several forms I have to fill in each year are .pdf files, but they
have buttons on different pages which you can press to carry out
checks, for example, or connect to a website and upload some of the
    form's content.

I've been evaluating it. Foxit reader certainly works with
fillable-inable forms. Usefully it will also export and import the data
from form fields. Very impressed I am. Download the free version and
    test drive it.

The only problem is that the powers that be won't allow us to install it
at work. The PDF creator is also pretty natty and has coped with
everything I have thrown at it - not free though.

On my netbook, Acrobat reader was 145Mb; Foxit is less than 6Mb.

Foxit does have a very slightly evil installer, though. Browser toolbars,
complementary Ebay shortcuts all over the place. I know you can say no, but
    just **** off, OK?

Thanks for that. I've been reading an awful lot of PDF documents
recently (house extension - everything in the building trade seems to
come in PDF format) and Adobe Reader just winds me up - there's
something about the way the "hand" tool works which means that if you're
trying to read a document you end up continually zooming in and out by
    mistake.

I was absolutely amazed when I find out how much[1] companies are
willing to pay if you get your users to download a toolbar with your
application. As you say you don't have to install them (though the
default is usually yes). It probably completely funds Foxit so I
    wouldn't complain too much.

[1] double digit $s in some cases apparently
