FOAK : 6mm Allen Driver 3/4" or 1/2" Socket ? Anyone ?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Brownz \(Mobile\), Apr 14, 2009.

  1. Two questions really....

    1. Anyone have a sturdy 3/4" or 1/2" Socket type allen key of the 6mm
Flavour, the type you use with a socket wrench.

    2. BMW K100RS 8v 1989 fitted with Showa forks - I shouldn't need to remove
the upper fork legs from the headstock to change fork seals and replace the
    fork springs should I ?

I'm off oot now for a beer as I'm pissed off at not being able to get the
allen bolt out at the base of the fork that holds the stanchion springs etc
    to the upper fork leg.

Back in a couple of hours.

    Hurrumph.

Just swing by your nearest Halfords and buy one. They sell them
    individually or as a set.

  11. Just picked up a set - 14 notes from halfrauds for a 3/4" set of bits,
I just hope they are long enough to reach the bolt in the bottom of
    the fork stanchion.

    3/4"?

3/8", surely? Haven't you got any extension bars?

Oh, and you do realise that you'll probably need something to hold the
damper rod (inside the stanchion) in place, don't you?

What's wrong with friction, inertia and a rattle-gun?

Nothing, but I'm guessing that if he didn't have any hex bits, he might
also be lacking in the power tools department.

Anyway, I normally make up something to hold the damper rod using a
selection of extension bars and socket adapters.

Yebbut think of the torque you could put through 6mm allen key with a
    3/4 breaker bar.

I have a set of 3/4 stuff, left over from my HGV specialisation [1]
    days. Brutish it is.

    Paul.

[1] Which I graduated in, but never actually used in anger ...

    A pointed stick?

Been there, done that. Waste of a perfectly good broom handle, IYAM.

  19. Heh.... yeh, I meant to type 3/8" not 3/4" !
No rattle guns in this garage I'm afraid, a compressor and airtools
collection would be nice, but I can't justify it at the mo.
To stop the stanchion turning you take the front spindle and nip it up
in the clamp leaving yourself enough room to get the allen key in (or
    so the haynes manual says).
