Floppy problem

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Mungo \Two Sheds\ Toadfoot, Aug 12, 2006.

  1. For reasons of the utmost secrecy I need to temporarily install a second
floppy drive in my pc. I've connected it to the two way cable which was
already there, handily. The connector with the twisted wires is still
connected to a: and the normally wired connector in the middle of the cable
    is connected to b:

I've changed drive b: in the BIOS from "None" to "1.44Mb 3.5" floppy" but it
won't work. The second drive has 6 pins and a jumper and the original
drive...dunno because it's quite inaccessible, being surrounded by other
    drives, as it is.

If I put the jumper in the various possible locations the led on b: is
either lit all the time, or there's bugger all. Neither drive actually works
when b: is connected whether the jumper on b: is located or not.

Any ideas on how to get them both going?

  3. I thunked about this but there's a plastic extrusion in the middle of the
connector that locates in a cutout on the drive. I haven't actually checked
but I imagine it only goes in one way round. I'll probably find that the
cable isn't suitable for the second drive; that's the sort of thing that
    normally happens to me.

Wouldn't been the first time I'd seen that happen, the cut out being on
    the wrong side, that is.

Probably the wrong type of cable. Get a memory stick or a USB drive.
What exactly are you trying to achieve?

  6. Well, as you asked...I've got a bunch of Amiga floppy discs with music on
them that I composed with OctaMed. One of the mods features sound samples of
my daughter when she was 2, 14 years ago, and there are also a lot of
    separate sound samples of her.

I'd like to be able to listen to them again and I've found some software
which is supposed to be able to copy an Amiga floppy onto a pc one so that
the mods and sounds can be opened in the pc version of Med but it needs an
extra floppy drive so that it can copy from one to the other.

The easiest way would be to connect an Amiga's audio output directly to a pc
and just record the mods and samples, which would be fine as I don't want to
fettle them, but I haven't got an Amiga now and I'm loath to buy one just
for this. I may have to because I can't find anybody locally who's got an
    Amiga with OctaMed on it.

Ho hum. I hate it when simple ideas get all complicated.

    I forget too.

However I can just about recall some idea that you either need
a cable with a few wires twisted (this is easily visible in a normal
ribbin' cable), OR you need to set the jumpers on the drive
so that it is drive B or 1 (of 0 .. 1 .. 2) or something like that.

Preceeding may well be total bollocks. Maybe I am thinking of
    something else.

Maybe the drive just doesn't work.

Should've transferred the porn collection to more modern
media sooner would be my advice.

Maybe if you explaned more of the nature of the secret
mission someone could come up with a workaround?

If the drive has a model number on it google may turn up
the jumper settings. But you will have tried that already.

    Good luck.

  8. Could that be classed as a ginge? :)
BTDT with no luck. The original floppy drive is playing up now and I'm fed
    up with it.

    Tanglefoot time, I think.

Failing that, I could dig out the A1200 I have here and see if it's
    still working.

I'm sure that there are a few uk.d-i-yers who have Amigas

(I do, but the monitor, mouse and kbd are ... somewhere)

  11. It's Adfread, which as the name suggests does indeed make an .adf image
file. Not being able to even connect the second floppy drive I didn't
realise that I would need emulation software and a ROM image as I hadn't
looked into it past the "Your pc can read Amiga floppies" part!
I'll do that if I can't come up with someone who owns a working OctaMed'ed
    Amiga, thank you.

Ho yus? Would you like to borrow a torch and shovel? For the digging?

I advertised for the borrowing of an Amiga in my local Freecycle and got a
reply from a chap who said he had one complete with Med, so I replied, all
enthusiastic like, and haven't heard from him since. I think he was just
    gloating.

  13. No, can't use a USB drive; it has to be on the same cable as the first
    drive.

We had two. If it's the good one with the 120mb hard drive it had
octamed 4 and 5 on it. I can't remember what was in the other one
    though.

    I'll go and rummage.

So far, a PSU, an external floppy, a number of mice but the box with
the important bit is missing, presumed lost. I'll email you if I find
    it.

    No crocodiles either.

Got one, and Octamed 4 and 5. This Amiga also appears to have a pc
floppy reading util, as when I put a floppy in it brings up two icons,
    one labelled PC0:

How do you want to sort this out? Where do you live? It might be better
to transfer the equipment to you on a permanent basis.
