Yeah, I got that, and I feel your pain.

I just felt the need for a Dennis Leary quote, is all.

Sure, and it used to irritate me too. But there's nothing technically
wrong with it - it's just a vernacular thing. These days, when I'm in
the US, I use this form of request almost exclusively.

Oh, you were talking about in England. As you were then.
Do it. No court in the land could possibly blame you.

    Q. How do you address someone with a higher degree in mediaeval literature?

    A. "Can I get a half-caff latté."

So the coffee shop is one place where the use of traditional forms of
    English should not prove fatal.

  5. Geographically maybe. On every other front Brizzle is somewhat
disconnected from what the rest of us consider to be reality..
    Indeed.

Although the EU doesn't have 'embassies' as such, it does have
'delegations' which fulfil a similar function, of which there are
around 100. You won't see them in Member States, of course. They have
Heads of Delegation, who present their credentials to the Head of
State of the country concerned in the same way as an Ambassador, and
they will often be referred to as Ambassadors by the host country.

In third world countries, their activities are dominated by
administering development aid, but they also have a role to play in
connection with trade matters and implementation of the Common Foreign
and Security Policy (as far as there is one...).

They wouldn't be able to help you if you lost your passport or ended
up arrested in a third country (unless there was some unusual
political dimension), but that sort of thing is down to the consular
arm of overseas representation anyway, rather than an embassy.

Very true - but then you'd be hard pressed to find a parliament
elsewhere in the world that has the same degree of power as the UK
parliament. I don't think that the power of the European Parliament
should be under-estimated - it's not completely impotent. It has
significant powers of veto over a lot of EU legislation initiated by
the Commission. And remember when it forced the dissolution of the
    Commission in 1998 (or thereabouts)
Actually, Commissioners don't need to have been previously elected
officials in their home country, although many have been. And, of
course, upon taking up their Commissioner jobs, they have to resign
from *any* other posts that they hold anyway, whether political or
not. Moreover, any influence from their home state is specifically
forbidden by legislation (although the practical effectiveness of that
legislation is in some doubt, see e.g. the German Commissioner leaping
to the defence of the German motor industry following environmental
    legislation proposals).

The Council of Ministers won't *necessarily* be populted by elected
officials either, although it usually is. It only needs to be
populated by members of government. Since these are not necessarily
elected officials in some countries (e.g. the UK, more specifically
e.g. Lord Falconer), then accountability to the electorate will not
necessarily be achieved through the Council of Ministers either.
Couldn't agree more, especially if any further enlargement is to take
place (which is by no means guaranteed). Luckily institutional reform
is a subject which is under serious discussion. Whether anything will
happen as a consequence, mainly because of the decision-making
paralysis induced by the institutions themselves, is far from certain.

I'd go so far as to suggest that the former is insulting, as it suggests
the 'non-existence' of the person doing the getting.
I also hate the misuse of the word 'gotten'.
    So there.

By the way, did I mention I have a new black Sprint ST? I love it, but
    not in a rude way.

If you're going for a literal approach then neither of these
expressions actually means "will you please give me...".
I don't see why it should, any more than 'can I have'.
Misuse? What, as in the past participle of 'to get'? Sadly, this is
another sacred cow I gave up some time ago when I discovered that it
was the commonly used term in both Britain and America up until the
early 20th century, when it began to be dropped on this side of the
    Atlantic.

And much as it galls, we can't be scathing of the merkins both for
inventing/using new (and wrong) terms and at the same time for holding
    onto an older usage.
The 1050? Not ridden one, but to my mind the old one (like I had, also
in the one true colour) looked better. The extra grunt for no weight
    increase would be nice, mind.

Yup, 1050. In the end I got it on the basis of safe handling and grunt.
The colour was a bonus, as the dealer (Woods) had just received it that
day and it was tucked away in a corner still in delivery wax. They had
nearly convinced me to go for blue until I spotted it.

This is my point. When I see reports of someone having "consensual sex" in
contested case (rape, for example) there's no the consent, so nothing
consentual, or consenting. or indeed, consensual.
