So looking at the current crop for a 2up litre plus bike for Euro mile
(km) munching. The only one that gets me interested, Honda's are
    excluded, is the FJR.

Has to be FAF, handle nicely, all comforts and be worth playing with
once the luggage etc. is divested.

Is it any good?? before I bother trying to find a test bike.

There were 2 on my last trip to Italy. The owners seemed happy with them.
Very good at high speed autobahn stuff.

One of the chaps on an older bike [1] had to source a new starter motor. He
was a rather large person. An FJR owner quite happily transported him on
the 150km round trip to fetch a new part.

They coped okay with the mountain passes.

  4. The FJR rocks a fat one, as they say. Great handling, bags of torque...

.... comfy as ****. New ones have ABS, of course, and I believe that
Yamaha have stopped taking the piss concerning the panniers, and that
they're now included in the price.

Only downside that I found, was that after an hour or two 160km/h-plus
cruising, one's fingers vibrate like tuning forks when you get off for a
pee and a ciggie (in the case of my passenger).

If I had the doshers, I'd buy another one (but with ABS this time :-/).

If, like me, you are going to spend a lot of time in mountains and on back
roads then yes. I've never kept a bike this long before as nothing suits my
    riding profile as well.

If you want to ride from Calais to Bavaria, on motorways, in one hit then
    no.

Returning from Italy, I rode from near Geneva to S.Wales in about 13 hours.
It was hard work. The bike has a relatively low top speed and poor wind
    protection compared to the FJR.

  6. Well that decides it for me, then. I fancy one, as well as a Blackbird
etc., but whilst I like the idea of crossing Europe on 'D' roads or
their equivalent, it just takes too fucking long. I manage to do it for
four hours or so, and then think, **** this, I want to arrive before
next Easter. It's then onto motorways, and without a good fairing, it's
    hell.

Never ridden one, but its chances were initially dashed by a very high
price. Now it's more realistically priced it's got to be worth a look.
After all, if you want a big-cube shafty tourer, there aren't many
    around, except for BMWs.

I've seen pictures of one with a blower fitted. It'd certainly help the
acceleration, but the top speed is limited by the gearing[1]

And as Wessie said, wind protection is rubbish, so it's uncomfortable
for long distance high-speed motorway work.

I think the main reason I got rid of mine was because it was too heavy
    and slow.

[1] though it's worth bearing in mind that it's actually faster in 5th,
because the 6th gear is an over-drive.

I'd have thought a K1200S would have been your sort of thing.

  12. On 24 Jan 2005 07:00:37 -0800, TOG@toil,
There is only one and its new big brother of course.
All the others are copies, and inferior copies at that.

But he's not interested in the Honda so he'll get stuck with a
Bavarian Schitt Wagen or the flimsy feeling Yam without standard
    panniers.

Well the OP didn't specify a shafty, so why not a ZZR11/1200? Certainly
FAF and my old 1100 was an excellent motorway blaster, I had a set of
Givi luggage on it and it handled just as well two up. Bit of a big old
bus but a good bike all the same.

  16. I had the same thoughts re a shafty, so ... a Trophy 1200 perhaps? As I
recall, there's someone hereabouts got one sort-of for sale kinda thing, in
the Sarf London area. Or has it gone, TOG, or have you decided to hang onto
    it?

No a Gixxer Thou! but neither for a pillion around Europe.
The new ZZR is a maybe though. Can you get decent panniers around that
    huge duck bill tail Lozzo?
