.....with a bike at least. Any advice? Like how do I secure my bike so it
doesnt topple over in a north sea gale? Do I trust the deck hands to
secure it or do it myself? Any advice welcome.

    Thanks

  3. Might be a bit over the top.

Leave the bike in first gear, gloves on the saddle, tie-down across the
saddle (protected by the gloves) from the floor on one side to the
    other.

    Job's a good 'un.

    Hi
When we went on DFDS from Newcastle to Amsterdam we had to secure our
own bikes, they did have some tie downs (lots) and we took our own.
We tied the bikes down and did a bounce test, if it moved then it was too
    loose.
We found two on the front and two on the rear was the best solution, to give
a pull effect against each other.

It would be with decent floor anchors, like P&O. IIRC, however, the
DFDS ferry has odd wires strung across the floor to act as anchors,
and it requires some ingenuity to get your bike secure.

Depends on which ferry company you're going with. On P&O Dover/Calais
a nice man uses a proper tie-down. P&O North Sea (Hull) have boxes full
of manky rope and you're left to get on with it. Superfast (Rosyth to
Zeebrugge) someone ties your bike down (and to other bikes) with rope.

Just my luck. Im going from Hull into Rotterdam. Sounds like I should take
my own tiedowns just in case.

  8. I think you are going to have problems... You should look at what the
people around you do and emulate them - and based on your top posting,
    you aren't good at that.
