Picked it up at lunchtime today, rode it home, back to work on the
    DLR.

Seemed a little sluggish, but I was taking it *very* easy. The crash
bars are still in Surrey[1], and the cobbled streets of Wapping were
    damp.

Tonight, after photo duties, I popped up the chippie on it - a 12 mile
trip there, and 0.6 miles home. :)

Starting is odd: choke on full, then straight off, and keep it idling
on the throttle. It is a little noisy when cold, but has been given a
clean bill of health by one of the Owner's Club recommended tuners.

Once warm, it ticks over really nicely. To pull away, no more than
1500 revs are required, and it's all a little dull, up to 4k.

From there it sounds like a Spitfire has pulled alongside, and it fair
zings along. Okay, it's no Blackbird, but it still shifts. On East
London's favourite test rack, it's quicker than the Wing, and miles
    quicker than the KH500.

The riding position is *proper* motorbike: totally unsuited to a
130mph bike with no fairing. Steering is light enough, and the newly
polished seat cover is a nuisance. Time will tell.

The noise, oh the noise; it's simply gorgeous - or it would be, if it
had a "sports" exhaust. The Marving looks nice, but it does strangle
    the noise a bit.

Handling - definitely late seventies, except that the new Konis[2] are
set to rock-hard. Quite how the seller rode it like this, I don't
    know.

I shall be wielding a C spanner in the morning.

Brakes: fucking dreadful. As expected, the rear is stronger than the
    front.

All in all - it's lovely.

    I am chuffed to ninepence.

    Roll on Chimay.

    [1] Off to collect tomorrow - cost for rechroming - £205 ! <thud>
    [2] Waves at sweller.

When I rode one, I was underwhelmed by the performance. It felt like a
big naked Jap bike without a great amount of go.

The upsides were the noise - as you say - and the incredible smoothness.
Handling was OKish on smooth roads, but needed a lot of muscle, Bumpy
bends at 90+ Do not Mix.

And the brakes were as you describe them - really very worrisome indeed.

    It is that.
So you should be. What's Linda's opinion?
Wish I was going to be there.

Now all you need is a Moto Martin chassis.
There's a copy of Bike on ebay ( 6967843365 ) with a Moto Martin CBX review.

  9. I tested a MM Z1000 in 1982 or thereabouts. Utterly crippling to ride
and plagued with electrical gremlins - so many specials of that era used
the stock wiring loom, and it was being stretched and contorted to fit
where it was never designed to, so things kept working loose or
    breaking.

It handled well for the era, mind.

I should probably get some. Does yours have a War Clause?
    Good enough.
If you could make it Kahlua, Tia Maria, Stoli, Beefeater, Malibu or
    Teachers, I'd be obliged.

    On Fri, 8 Jul 2005 22:58:43 +0100,
I have to say that it was a CBX that got me hooked on motorcycling.

Sitting out on a local common, eating ice cream, as one did in those
days; when the six-into-one suddenly appeared form one horizon and
vanished in to the distance on the other. We could hear it for a good
    few minutes

The noise was sublime! That was in about 1983/4. It sort of reminds
me of the first time I saw Concord taking off.

Judging by previous experience, it'll be Trippel or nothing.
