    1) It'll be a little gutless in restricted form.
    2) For a first bike, buy something that is a little grubby. You *will*
    bin it.

  3. You're mad.

    1. It's the most over-priced bike on the planet. The residual values
will be horrifying. You'll lose something like 3.5k in the first year.
    Maybe more.

    2. It's still a large lump for someone coming from DA. And experience of
a mountain bike won't help you. You will bin it.

rob2 secured a place in history by writing:
DA will get you through a test, not teach you how to ride in any real world
sense. If you have shedloads of cash and can afford to drop it, if not bin
it badly, OK - but it's way more than you will be able to use, and is
asking for trouble. There are far better options for getting your first
    few month's experience.

You might also have a lot of difficulty insuring it....

That's a rather heavy and expensive bike to start with. If you really
want it, go for it. But it wouldn't be my recommendation. Objecitvely, I
think the styling is interesting but it's grossly underpowered.

If you want that sort of bike - i.e. unfaired, decent handling,
    interesting looks - then I'd suggest a Kawasaki Z750. It's lighter than
the Yamaha - useful for a novice as it doesn't take much to drop a big
bike - and has similar power. It's had good reviews and can be found at
    quite low prices.

Get a few insurance quotes from the web sites first to see what you can
    afford.

Another key consideration is that at the moment you know next to nothing
about bikes. You'd do well to get something not too expensive to start
with because it'll take you a while to find out just what sort of bike you
really get along with. In a year or so you'll be able to make an informed
decision and not have to rely on the opinions of a bunch of arseholes on
    the Internet.

Too big and too heavy (particularly around town). Your euphoria at getting
your licence will quickly be dashed by lack of enjoyment of riding the
    thing.

Go for something similar to what you do your DAS on and get some experience.

(My own opinion only, of course).
