A small town in Wise county got scorched yesterday, due to someone burning trash. It took out several homes, barns, sheds, vehicles. My father-in-law just called me and said that the little town of Cross Plains (12 miles south of him), is burning. The fire has already destroyed 15 homes, several businesses, a church and more, with 1 death so far. Last he heard, it was still burning and spreading. What I want to know is, what part of "burn ban", do people not understand? Everything is extremely dry, the grass and trees are tender boxes, waiting to ignite and I find it hard to believe, that there are people unaware of this fact. Sorry about you being sick over the holidays. I hope you're better now. -- Sunny, IRPK (PK Riders), ISRA #7123 Texas Veterans Assoc., Chapter 3 http://www.pkriders.org/txvets.htm '02 XVS650A "Deerslayer" '99 XVS650A - Joe's "Deerslayer Too"
Sounds like a bad situation down there. Maybe a prayer or two for rain is in order. We have our share of fire problems here during our short summer and I can empathize with you and your neighbours. Sometimes the air is so thick with smoke it gets hard to breath, even though the fires are hundreds of miles away. Are the majority of the fires down there started by "man" or from more natural sources like lightening? -- Don RCOS# 7 No Riding Today 2000 - Yamaha Venture Millenium Edition http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/radium1.htm http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/banff.htm http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/kananaskis.htm http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/walkercalgary.htm http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/calgarybrowning.htm http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/venture.htm http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/gem.htm http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/highwood.htm http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/reynolds.htm http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/sask.htm http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/osoyoos.htm
Prayers, rain dance, whatever. We'd appreciate that. We got smoke from fires in Mexicao, a few years back, so I know what you're talking about. We'd have to have storm clouds to get any lightning and there hasn't been any rain. I think we've had a tenth of an inch of rain, since August and that hasn't been recently! One fire was started by a spark from a train, just east of Cisco. It burned thousands of acres, before it was finally put out last week. I hear another one is burning in that same vicinity. There is a gas fire 20 miles to the east of us, on Hwy 180. It was started by an oil rig that drilled into a gas pocket in the earth. The gas fire was started over 2 weeks ago and it's still burning! A lot of fires are started by welding sparks, vehicle electrical shorts, house fires and of course the main cause, trash burning. Joe needs to do some plowing but is afraid that if he hit a rock with the plow and caused a spark, our hay field would go up like kerosene, taking the house and outbuildings with it. To top that off, we have a gas injection well in the corner of our property. Not a nice thought... -- Sunny - IRPK, ISRA #7123 Texas Veterans Assoc., Chapter 3 http://www.pkriders.org/txvets.htm '02 XVS650A "Deerslayer" '99 XVS650A - Joe's "Deerslayer Too"
Well take care and be careful. While up at my sister's cabin on Lac Sante it actually poured rain on Christmas night. I can guarantee you rain is a very rare occurrence this far north this time of year. If I could I'd send a little your way. -- Don RCOS# 7 No Riding Today 2000 - Yamaha Venture Millenium Edition http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/radium1.htm http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/banff.htm http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/kananaskis.htm http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/walkercalgary.htm http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/calgarybrowning.htm http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/venture.htm http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/gem.htm http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/highwood.htm http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/reynolds.htm http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/sask.htm http://www3.telus.net/public/dbinns/osoyoos.htm
No, some goof burning a heap of trash. I'm sure his neighbors appreciate his genius. There was also another fire caused by a welder, working on a fence. And a couple, caused by a spark from a train, on the tracks near Cisco. -- Sunny - IRPK, ISRA #7123 Texas Veterans Assoc., Chapter 3 http://www.pkriders.org/txvets.htm '02 XVS650A "Deerslayer" '99 XVS650A - Joe's "Deerslayer Too"
lease. There were a report that 113 homes were burnt to the ground and I believe it to be so. There were alot of homes we saw that only the slab and the fireplace were standing. It burnt most of them to the ground and one church was burnt down that we could see. We went to the hunting lease on Tuesday and when we took our exit on 206, there were two cops that had the road blocked and wouldnt let us thru because of the fires. Bad deal down there. Redshad
I was wondering where you got off to.. lol.. I imagine all the deer kind of headed west, didn't they ? <chuckle> Just goes to show, those critters are smarter than we are.. they get the hell outta Dodge when something like this happens.. Glad you didn't get caught in there while it was burning up, Redshad.. Regards.. Bill Walker Irving
Yeah, I saw on the news that over 100 buildings burned, plus Joe's Dad has kept me posted. Luckily, he lives a good ways out of town but he knows quite a few of the folks in town. What has happened to that Cross Plains, is terrible. For a town with a population of 1000, this is total devastation. -- Sunny - IRPK, ISRA #7123 Texas Veterans Assoc., Chapter 3 http://www.pkriders.org/txvets.htm '02 XVS650A "Deerslayer" '99 XVS650A - Joe's "Deerslayer Too"
