I'm in shock. The museum's a brilliant place.

It doesn't seem possible, given the way the machines were displayed.
Haven't yet seen the news - was much lost/damaged, and is there any idea
    of what happened?

I still can't quite believe it...

    Regards,

    Simonm.

Three halls and over half the collection gone. They had the curator on
the local radio as I was driving back tonight and the man was nearly in
    tears - can't say I blame him.

  3. Yet another concentration of precious artefacts goes up in smoke. (Remember
Norwich Library, Windsor Castle ?) I wonder if the place was covered by
sprinklers, and if not, why not.
Our works insurers were quite straight with us. No sprinklers, no insurance
cover, hence no business. Why are collections any different?

I suppose we'll have that twat Gus now telling us how much more all
the ShiteOldBritBikes are worth now that they've suddenly got even
rarer. "The only other one was in the National Motor Museum......"

Mind you, I bet every Brummie with a dead Triumph or Norton was
pushing it into the blaze in the hope of being able to make a swift
    insurance killing.

They aren't but insewerance is concerned with people not things so if you
don't have sprinklers then you don't get fire cover.
Same as no alarms - no theft cover.

Sprinklers etc are expensive and are probably on the 'one day we must...'
    list.

    Too late now though.

    Seems possible to me,
but then our local swimming pool burnt down a few years back!
    So anything is possible.

Why do they use the term raised to the ground when somewheres
    burnt down?

Hmm. I wondered that too - so I had a look.

The word is 'razed' as in:

    1. To level to the ground; demolish.
    2. To scrape or shave off.
    3. Archaic. To erase.

It's "razed" - means to level something to the ground. I always wondered
    that, too!

  12. Guess you're correct in most instances, but I worked in an industry where our
product was of very high value, and sprinklers were installed without question.
In our IT rooms halon was used until environmental considerations forced a
re-think, and then followed the discussions with our insurers mentioned earlier.
In my private life I have collected many items which could perhaps give pleasure
to others, and I'm certainly having second thoughts about leaving them to a
museum or similar institution. (and yes, I do have smoke detectors...)
