Filtering on dual carriageways

How fast? More specifically, to make good progress but be generally
acceptable to the forces of lawanorder?

I don't usually start filtering until the traffic, and therefore my
speed, has dropped below about 30mph. I then have a sort of hysteresis
where I don't stop filtering until I'm doing above about 40-45mph max.
I don't filter at more than about 5-10mph above traffic speed.

ISTR being told on last year's advanced riding assesment (by ex
class-one police rider) that filtering up to about 45-50mph was OK,
which surprised me. Did I hear right?

  2. One of the 'rants' heard the most often by me of my colleagues and friends
is that bikers are mad cunts who filter at '80 km/h' above the speed of the
traffic surrounding them. In other words, with a speed differential of 50
    mph or so.

My 'self-imposed' limit is that if 'ambiant traffic' is at 80 km/h, there's
no need to filter. My personal 'best' (or 'worst') was filtering at 200
km/h _indicated_ (124 mph) on the A13 on my Bandit, but that was
    fuckwittery of great magnitude.

Over here, filtering is illegal, but tolerated (for now).

I've followed you filtering up the M1 at 100+ 'a fair bit' mph.

You're kidding? I knew it was illegal in Germany, but I though France
    was rather more laid back.

Do you practice the kind of filtering that Trinity does with The
Keymaker two-up in The Matrix Reloaded on a Ducati 996?

I'm not one to talk. I must admit to filtering like a **** at silly
speeds. It really gets my adrenaline pumping.

It was that conversation about Counter Steering that did it.

I have also, coincidentally just finished watching The Matrix
Reloaded, and thought that I should post the 53 second clip in
    question.

  11. As long as it ain't dangerous....?

On the M25, if the traffic is moving at 30+, I don't filter. It's as
simple as that. There's always some twat who thinks: "Oooh, that lane is
moving 1mph faster!" and who lane-jumps with no indicators, no look to
see if you're coming, no nowt.

They don't expect a bike to come alongside them in heavy traffic moving
    at (say) 35mph.

Remember: "It is better to be a few minutes too late in this world than
a few years too early in the next."

In snarled up traffic in town, of course, I filter like Kona.

The cops who taught the BikeSafe London course said, that filtering
5-10mph faster than the surrounding traffic was acceptable. With the
proviso that you ride safely and with due care.

Bleh - I don't filter much faster than the traffic, and tend to hop
from safe spot to safe spot. I doubt I'm much quicker than 10mph
faster than traffic, but that's what I'm happy with. I practically
never look at the speedo though, so it's anybody's guess.

    *ding*

The only time that I reckon is mroe dangerous is when traffic is slowing at
different rates. As one lane halts, there is always some moron that thinks
he'll keep moving if he nips into the other lane that's still moving.
    Nice phrase.
