So I went out on the test ride on the CBR today and was able to conduct a
seasonal deal which I am happy with.

However as the bike lacks the feature of a centre-stand [1], I now ask
myself the question "How will I fill it up at the petrol station?" [2]

I seem to remember my instructor saying you shouldn't sit on your bike when
filling it up; so I kindly ask the FOAK how would you fill it to the brim
    for those long sessions?

  2. Ignore what the instructor said and sit on it.

  3. I wouldn't have thought it'd make that much difference. I've certainly never
    bothered anyway.

Many petrol stations wont start the pump if the rider is sitting on
    the bike.

    Either:
go to the next petrol station down the road
    or
get off the bike, once the pump has started sit on it again and fill
    up.

Leaving the pump "off the hook" because they're being twats.

Mr. Fantastic secured a place in history by writing:
About a 5th of a tank when I tried it once in the name of research. So
worth it IMO. Mind you, I've never encountered a petrol station that
refused to turn the pump on - but the possible ramifications were done to
death on here a couple of months ago.

Like wot the others say about stations that are arsy towards bikes, but
IMHO, the extra 5 miles worth of fuel you might get in by keeping the bike
completely upright ain't going to make too much difference really.

So these days, I just fill right to the top(as in so the fuel is just inside
the filler cap space) with the bike on the side stand, assuming that when I
get the bike upright there'll be some settling and a bit of an air gap at
    the top....

And then on a long ride fill up every 100-120 miles or so ((on the 955i) and
about every 50 on the NS as it's in for the Terry Shep 500 kit, new crank
and Jolly Moto pipe fitting on Friday....).

I have a centre stand that will fit that bike, seriously. It came off a
brand new CBR600FX that was raced from new. If you look under your bike
you'll see there are mountings for a centre stand there. The frames and
engine cases are almost identical on all the early alloy framed CBR6s

    Arrive at pump
    Stop engine
    kick side stand down
    take off gloves
    reset trip meter
    reset petrol tap
    open filler cap
    fill to overflowing
    close filler cap
    let bike settle on sidestand
    get off bike
    go pay
    piss off

Kayman emerged from their own little world to say
I never bothered putting my CBR6FX onto its mainstand to fill up. The range
is fine on a long run. I was usually ready to get off for a stretch before
    the yellow light came on.

However, if you are local to Lozzo then take up his offer of the stand.
You'll appreciate it when lubing the chain etc.

Heh. Z200 with no centrestand and broken-off sidestand on the way to
    Pixiefest:

    Arrive at pump
    stop engine
    take off gloves
    open filler cap
    fill to overflowing
    close filler cap
    get off bike
    lean bike against pump
    go pay
    piss off

Hmm, that's exactly what I do.

Might have to rethink it now though.

The Tiger goes on the centre-stand, unless I'm in a hurry and just want to

The Zed I just fill on its side-stand. There's a bit of metal in the
filler which marks the maximum fill level and it's at an angle so that
when the bike's on its side-stand it's level. Clearly Kawasaki have
assumed that the tank will be filled on the side-stand, not whilst being
held vertically. Given the shape of the tank it probably wouldn't make
much - if any - difference anyway.

I stay on my Tiger (no centre stand). I've only been asked to get off
twice. Both times, I left the nozzle hanging and pootled off. Luckily,
    I wasn't desperate...

In twenty-lots of years, I don't think I've *ever* filled the bike up
    on the centre stand.

    What's the big issue here?

A couple of litres, either way?

    Get a grip, FFS.

Why would you want to do this? You've got to get off at some point.

Fill it to the brim; put in oil; realise the petrol cap will displace at
least 150ml of fuel; make mups finish his bottle of pop; drain excess
    fuel into empty bottle.

    Piece of piss.

The Trophy leaned over so far on the sidestand, it was like filling up an
    old Fiesta.
When it's sucking the fuel down at not much better than 30MPG, every last
    drop counts.

Yes I can see how this question would surprise a few. However I am known
for asking about what may seem the blatantly obvious.

Like I said before remembering what my instructor told me years ago and
having not owned a bike with no centre stand before, just thought I'd ask.

Thank you to all that replied, it's interesting knowing the general census
    of opinion.
