Filling stations running out

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, Nov 13, 2007.

  1. It's starting to irritate me. Petrol station after petrol station seems
to be running out of ordinary unleaded, round my way. Usually in the
    evenings.

Last week, I had to try three before I found one that actually had
unleaded, as opposed to diesel and 'super whizzy at two quid a litre'
    (or whatever they call it).

The next day, it was the same, trying to buy diesel. All of a sudden,
everyone had sold out of the stuff.

And forecourts seem more busy, as well. Queues onto the road, in some
    cases.

Is it because people are deliberately filling up to fend off the next
price rise, or because filling stations are running down their
stockholding (they typically run their tanks at one-third to half
capacity anyway, because they can get instant deliveries and these days,
nobody wants to be sitting on expensive stock for longer than they need
to), or just because there's less to go around?

No idea. Anyone else noticed the phenomenon, or is it just my corner of
    south-west London?

Happening here in SE/S Central London as well. I've had to fill the Z
with super unleaded twice in the last couple of weeks at different
fuel stations because there was no regular.

Petrol's gone up in price quickly (ish). This has resulted in the
stations needing either more operating cash flow or better supply chain
    logistics.

They're going for the supply chain logistics... and not getting it
    nailed completely.

the evening , and it was open ,used the voucher , and casually said that you
were closed today was there a problem , and the answer no we put the prices
up!!! I did ask if it was 5p a litre increase , but didnt get a reply !

Esso down the road ran out twice last week. It's a popular garage
though as they price match the local Sainsburys & Asda.

Diesel's still way cheaper - a euro a litre from the supermarkets. I'm
going over weekend after next, and will come back with a brimming tank.

The press has been full of articles about more fuel protests by the hard of
thinking. Google news throws up quite a few stories over the weekend in
papers such as the People, Times and Evening Standard. The beeb & the Indie
    also covered the story.

So, people are probably topping up their tanks every evening "just in
    case".

A few places around Great Malvern were out of diesel a couple of weeks
ago and there was a shortage around Ipswich last week.

Could be. I was keeping an eye out tonight and a lot of the fuel
stations I passed seemed to have a number of nozzles out of service.

    snip.
Coryton did have a small fire recently.
It might have had an effect but I don't think so. I suspect it's more
a case of retailers not wanting to risk having a lot of money tied up
in fuel they can't sell because the wanky farmers and HGV operators
are having a hissy fit again.

  15. Not that has been heard of in this house and at about 15 miles we are
close enough to hear the bang.

  16. I think it is the knock on effect of an international conspiracy among
those with a vested interest in the success of The Almighty Dollar
causing a short of shortage of dollars as paper money.

See, ultimately all this has to be paid for in cash and what with The
Almighty Dollar falling like the devil from heaven and the price of oil
going up cos of the ragheads being greedy usurers that the actual number
of dollar bills needed to pay whoever is at the end of the chain has
more or less doubled and that The Friends of Merkainia are deliberately
not selling theirs so there is a shortage and the price doesn't drop as
fast. The knock on effect of this is a shortage of cash to give to the
tanker driver when he turns up at the refinery pier so BP et all are
only able to by half as much.

No time differential noted here. Tried to fill up in on the way home
Friday evening a couple of weeks ago and there was no regular, so
decided to leave it to Monday morning - and had to fill up with Super
    unleaded.

It seems that it's becoming a bit more prevalent but I put it down to
bad supply chain management most of the time (yes, this is possibly a
    ginge).

My local Tesco (the one at J10) seems to be regularly running out of
their 99 octane stuff, which does tend to piss me off a little as the
RX-7s are normally running on that stuff. But that was even before the
    current price hikes.

Several other stations that I use to seem to run out of the regular
stuff - unleaded and Diesel - more often at the moment than they used
to, though. But apart from the usual queues as the above mentioned
Tescos that make you wonder if they're handing out free petrol, it
seems to be pretty normal down here.

Tells you the prices around the place or in the department of your
choice. Aslo has maps to the stations.
