I passed my test in '87 on a used CB125rs then bought a split new GPZ500s as
my first "proper" bike. Like you, I travelled in all sorts of weather - not
just for the sake of breaking it in quickly but because it was my only mode
of transport. I followed the manufactures instructions to the letter and
the excitement of reaching that magical 1000 miles was tremendous. So the
day finally arrived and I gave it the beans. The bike was sold about 3
weeks after that (BIG letdown). My next bike was an '87 VFR750. I did
~30,000 on that bike including all winter. I didn't have a car licence at
that time and I had to commute 50 miles a day to & from work.

    Cheers & thanks

Oops - it was actually '89 when I passed my test. The GPZ was new on an "F"
plate. The VFR was a "D" plater (2 year old at that time).

  4. Wimps. I picked up my FJR on the Saturday morning, and took it back on the
Tuesday afternoon for its 1000 km service.

Ha. When I was running in my 1200 Bandit, I was told just to keep it
below 3500 rpm for the first 100 miles, then no more than 5000 until I
reached 500 miles. In top gear that's about 60 and 90 mph
    respectively...

That's nothing !! When I got my (new) Rocket 3 I picked it up at 10-00
    a.m.,
Wheelied it off the forecourt, rode straight up to Scotland, changed the oil
    and filter myself
then rode back, stopping only for fuel and piss breaks, and took it back to
    the dealer
the previous morning for its first service ....

you had it easy in them days

What on earth has that got to do with it?

Some sort of reason for riding around at 3 RPM by the sound of it. Isn't
that what warranties are for? :)

Mine's had it's first service now... straight after collecting it (well
after warming it up) it was down the local 'silly road' to see whether or
not it can do over 110mph without wandering off the road.

    It can :)

However, on the negative side, I suspect the rear tyre isn't going to last
long considering how much 'ooomph' it has coming out of corners/acclerating
    when used properly.

It's also rather novel (for me) to have the front of the bike rising in the
air, but due to long travel suspension, the wheel not actually coming off
    the ground... wheelie'ing for poofs.

On the TL I used to get somewhere between 1000 and 1800 miles out of a rear
(BT010) depending how hard it got ridden

On a more depressing note, the gixer has all but trashed this BT014 in less
    than 1000 miles, ho hum.

Erk.. well these are slightly harder than the 010 and I hope to get a wee
bit more out of them ... otherwise the idea of the DL being a bit more
    economical goes out the window...
Double erk - I managed to (usually) get 4-6k out of rears on the GSX-R6 -
but I do ride like a girl.

It means you can go "Thank **** for that, it was worth every penny!" as
you get to actually use the engine.

My not insignificant mass plus my riding style and wheelies seem to have
stripped the rubber off, but they do stick and since going to 014s I haven't
had any rear wheel slides out of the bends, the only time it spins up is
when I try to loft it on cold tyres.

From recollection, your front wheel spends approximately half as much
time in contact with the road as your rear wheel, though...

I had a nice fishtailing experience in the 350i the other night. Warming
the tyres up before pulling exotic manouvres is definitely a good plan...

I lashed out on new rubber for the Matchless today. £100 smackers for new
Avons front and rear. Slidemasters of course. :)

The one's I took off were down to the canvas, but then they were half worn
when I bought the bike seven years ago.
