FFS, you could get a decent 400 Four for this

Erm, not really. Engine was unchanged except for an extra oil line to
the head. And they uprated the brakes. But it was still a Super Dream.

I recall riding a late model which had different shape tank etc and the
suspension seemed more pleasant. Ther engine felt quite smooth and had
    reasonable torque.

  3. I think maybe you're muddling up the original 400 Dream (dumpy podgy
styling, five-speed box) with the later Super Dream.

The Super Dream was never restyled as such - just a few cosmetic tweaks
    and different graphics.

  4. Never heard of that happening on a Yamaha 400. Nor a 250, come to
    that.....

They gave it the more "Euro" styling in 1982, with that stupid ducks
arse tail end and slightly more inspiring graphics. The basic shape was
    the same though.

My old XS250 rat-bike killed and ate everything, except its engine. The
engine was fucking horrible in every respect but refused to die.

Thinking back it was a twin front disk model (quite good brakes) made in
    Brazil. This would be 1983-84ish

  8. The CB450 was made in Brazil, not the CB400. The 450 was styled
differently, and had quite a few engine differences too, including (as
you say) a lot of torque. I owned one of these, too. I think you're
muddled between the CB400 and the CB450.

Oh, and the CB400 always had double discs. As did the 450, actually. The
250 made do with a single disc.

  9. I remember Gibbo's utterly *horrible* XS250 Custom, the year of the
ShiteOldBike run to the Bol at Magny-Cours.

I especially remember the non-functioning fuel tap, and the Mole grips
clamped into the fuel line that acted as a substitute.

Ah yes 450cc it was. I knew it seemed like a nicer bike than the
    original SD.
