Two whole motorbikes are cheaper than a bike/trailer.

    Weird..

  6. That really depends upon the sort of vehicle one hires and how long one
hires it for. Motorcycles are expensive and difficult to hire, particular
during popular motorcycle events. If one has a larger family then you need
to hire a Tarago and 3 days hire would see the price advantage gone...
doesn't go far into even a weeks holiday.

We're trying to discourage anyone perverted enough to hang something of the
side of a perfectly good motorcycle from coming here.

We have enough strange people already, without encouraging more :)

I imagine very many would have, and many more than once.

October to April are probably best, unless you have very warm and
water-proof gear, but those are also the peak tourist months.

Winter is excellent riding as long as you don't need to stick to a schedule.
There will be times when snow & ice are a bother in some areas and can cause
    delays.

You'll have to be prepared for the urge to move here though. Some of us
    find it irresistable.

Does the traffic during peak tourist months effect good motorcycling?.

Moving to Tassie sounds like a good idea, but we had a choice, Mrs's wanted
to move to the Mudgee region in NSW, and I wanted to move to anywhere else.
We compromised and moved to the Mudgee region in NSW. Now I'm here, its
pretty good, but when we get itchy feet again Ill make sure Tassie is her
    idea.

    Eh?
The larger the family the MORE attractive the fly/hire option is.
For each adult you gain $300-odd and for each kid you gain $120-odd...
    The more the merrier!

I grew up and went to Uni in Tassie and was back there during Jan and Feb
this year. I'll clarify a little bit of what Conehead said - 'peak tourist
months' in Tassie doesn't mean anything like 'peak tourist months' in Noosa
or Coffs Harbour. Even on roads like the Cradle Mtn Link I saw at most maybe
15-20 cars an hour during January.

Tassie is motorcycling heaven, and anyone who says otherwise has clearly
never been there. I'm not able to dispute that NZ might be better (never
been there), but Tassie is definitely the best of what Oz has to offer.
Imagine the GOR, Mt Glorious and the Putty all thrown within 2 hours of each
other, add empty and top-class roads, stunning food, cheap accomodation and
(except for the west coast) good riding conditions for most of the year (the
East Coast is actually fairly dry year-round). The west coast is wet, make
no mistake - it gets the all the rain from the Roaring 40s dumped on it. The
Western Tiers mountain range catches most of the rain and lets the East
    Coast stay nice and dry.

Snow and ice are generally only found in winter at elevations above 500-600
metres (early morning frosts excepted - don't set out before 9AM from
anywhere during the middle of winter). Yes it is colder than Queensland, but
rug up and bit and enjoy deserted, spectacular roads. Most roads are worth
doing twice, once for the twisties and again at 50 kms just to enjoy the
    scenery.

And if I could find a way to make a living there, I'd move home in a
heartbeat. A truly beautiful place with an exceptional quality of life.

And that's only one way. A family of four saves about $1700 in total.

Yes, November through April, although it was August/September when I did it and we
    survived the cold ok.
Scenery was brilliant, people great despite the jokes (hi Coney and Smack) and
    definately a good value holiday.

  17. February is a good time to go - not school hols, still warm, but not
stinking hot. As usual, watch out for trucks and roadkill, and check out the
    west coast before the east

It will mean that you'll need to have your accommodation arranged before you
come. Last summer there wasn't an empty bed (for tourists) to be had for
love or money (or drugs, I'm told). There's always a bed for a night at
    Chateau Conehead, though.

The traffic volume isn't a problem, it's the unpredictability of
scenery-watching drivers (some of whom have never driven on the left
    before), and the more-demanding roads.

This Kiwi would agree with that.
Dunno about NZ being better - that's an opinion thing, but there is
more of it and it certainly fits the description below regarding
excellent and empty roads, good surfaces and good weather in Nov thru
    March even into April.

NZ is like Tassie in that it's mountainous and therefore the roads are
twisty but not always tight & twisty. A real mixture.
Same in NZ so taking wet weather gear is a must!
    Same again for NZ.

My wife and I will retire to either Tassie or NZ or if we win Lotto,
    have a home in both.

Incidentally anyone wanting info on touring NZ or a bike shipped over
    - that's what I do. This Summer I will probably ship over 150 Aussie
bikes to NZ for ppl wanting a different touring holiday. Feb 2005 I
have tentative bookings for 250 bikes.

If you're only going to NZ for a week then get a hire bike from John
Rains at Te Waipounamu Motorcycle Tours in Christchurch. ph + 64 3 372
3537 or www.motorcycle-hire.co.nz/ - they also have a branch in
    Auckland.

But if you want to do the job properly and have 4 weeks (or possibly
    more) then I'm on 03 9331 0947.

    Kind regards

There ain't no way I'm going to put up with a child for a week to save
$120. I'm gunna wait for a much better offer.

As for more than one child, you've gotta be kidding.
