    Are there any, anymore?

Tried the ferry sites - no sign of any from Newcastle, anymore. All I
can find is Harwich to Esbjerg. Is that it?

Yes. The land bridge killed them off as the triangular routes became
    unviable.

why are ferries so fucking expensive generally? I have been vaguely
thinking about going on the bike next time I visit the rellies in NI,
but it's about 3 times the cost of flying when you add the price of
the ferry crossing[1] to the required fuel.

    [1] both Dunlougaire/Holyhead and Belfast/Stranraer are nearly 100
sheets for a bike - WTF is it basically no cheaper than a car?

No, they stopped it winter of 2007, IIRC.
There might be something from Hull to Denmark, but otherwise, yes.

Because, unless I've fundamentally misunderstood the basics of a market
economy, the price isn't based on the cost of transporting you, it's
based on how much the consumer is prepared to pay for the service.

I don't think that the difference between a Denmark-Sweden/Norway ferry
and being able to drive from Copenhagen to Malmo did it, so much as the
comparison between the £700 we paid for Harwich-Esbjerg/Bergen-Newcastle
in 2007 and what we could have got for the same money doing a fly-drive.
Malmo's a HELL of a long way south of Stockholm or Dalarna or any of the
other main touristy bits of Sweden.

I assume there is a dodgy Celtic cartel that have all the berths tied up so
that the likes of LDLines can't come in and undercut everyone.

Do you collect Clubcard points? You can get 4x face value on P&O & Irish
Ferries. I got my Eurotunnel ticket "free" from Tesco.

They do seem expensive don't they? I paid nearly 80 quid for
Portsmouth-Caen return as a foot passenger last week.

But then again with the car it's several hundred at this time of year,
still cheaper than the drive from calais with fuel and tolls etc.
I think you've at least missed an h off there.....

    of course you're right.

But...it's not an amount that I, as a consumer, are prepared to pay.

The bridge was opened in 2000 and there was very little ferry capacity left
by 2007. Hence sky high prices as only those really wanting a ferry from
    Bergen would pay the price.

Before the bridge, most of the North Sea ferry traffic was freight. The
land bridge includes a rail link. That freight now goes from Harwich to
Esbjerg for distribution by rail then truck to final destination.
http://snipurl.com/ro_ro is a google map showing the container RORO
operation, using dollies. This hub based system is much more efficient than
having disparate ferries using more trucks & greater distances by road.
    Especially in a Scandinavian winter.

I can't see how the bridge stopped ferriess running from England to Goteburg
or England to Norway's ports though, as it's hardly in the same area.

I can understand that people wanting to get between Denmark and Bert Weedon
would be thankful for the speed of using the bridge, but the cost of the
ferry over the Oresund sound wasn't particularly expensive. Certainly no
more than the ferry from Germany to Denmark.

Just about, apart from Hull to around the same area. No ferries to Sweden or
    Norway anymore.

As others have pointed out, yes , thats it. And it is all the fault of

Cost of fuel, bet they do not get the same concessions that airlines do on
    aviation fuel.

Staff costs, more staff needed to run ship than a plane, and time.
'cos they are the major user. And bikes fall over and people make insurnace
    claims.
