....Or could I get away with no more nails or similar very heavy duty
    adhesive?

I reckon the self tappers will look rubbish.

Gyp emerged from their own little world to say
So does the FE. Although they are quite effective. I used one on my TDM.

I used just some blobs of araldite and it worked a treat for the one on
the fazer. Might want to rough sandpaper the contact sides first though.

    OK, WTF is Sikaflex 221?

    Ooo... Sikaflex®-221 is a high-quality multi purpose non-sag 1-c
polyurethane sealant that cures on exposure to atmospheric humidity to
    form a durable elastomer.

Not only that, but... Sikaflex®-221 bonds well to a wide variety of
substrates and is suitable for making permanent elastic seals of high
adhesive strength. Suitable substrate materials are wood, metals, metal
primers and paint coatings (2-c systems), ceramic materials and
    plastics.

Where does one obtain a small quantity of this wonder goo?

Marine suppliers (marine as in watery as opposed to commando for any
    pedantic perusers...)
    Chandlers
Boatyards will generally have a few tubes "on the go"
Automotive type places because it's used for windscreen sealing and I've
used it for sticking replacement mirrors over cracked ones.....
I can also recommend it for having kept the zip in my Frank Thomas (left)
boot in place for over a year now.......... unfortunately, I can also report
that holding ones fenda extenda in place with wooden clothes pegs whilst
awaiting the Sikaflex to set is not advised unless one ensures that there's
no way the stuff can ooze out and come into contact with one or more of the
clothespegs. However if such a thing should happen to you I hope that it
will only adhere to the peg on the underside of the mudguard, as happened in
    my case! Fortunately.
