Felt oil

  1. What type of oil is suitable for the felt lubricating the points cam,
    besides "felt oil"?

  2. In your case I would use common motor oil. If it is as dry as a bone, then I would work
some grease into the felt and the add a drop of oil. When I changed points I would put a
little grease on the backside of the rubbing block. As the rubbing block would wear, it
would also pick up a bit of the grease. Dont use too much. Grease and oil is a terrific
insulator. Sometimes one of the fellows would get in the bad habit of not cleaning the
points upon installation. Eventually he would spend a bunch of time trying to figure out
why he didn't have any spark and would quickly get back into the habit. Every now and
then someone would put a little vaseline on the points as a prank. Never leave the cover
off with a new set of points installed and go to lunch. It is likely not to start after
    lunch.

My '76 CJ360T Honda Shop Manual says to "Lubricate the breaker point cam
with a thin film of grease."

I put general-purpose grease in the felt wiper too.

  4. Well, if you don't want to be cruel to felts, please be consistent
and don't use the oil from neats' feet either. ...especially if the
Neats' Protection Society still exists within rec.motorcycles!

Or was that naugas and their hides? I get confused these days...

[Before people wave their Funk & Wagnalls at me, I do know the origin of
    neat's-foot oil.]

Naugas are extinct -- probably due to all the naugahyde furniture back in
the 60s & 70s. Neats aren't extinct, but they need help breeding, since they
can't run after mates (what with all their feet having been pressed for
    oil...)....

  6. Neats are nasty critters. I would tell you my experience hunting neats but
my therapist tells me that I shouldn't so I won't. The only thing I can
say is to stay away from them. If you don't know what they look like,
trust me you will know it when you see one as they look like...well...uh,
    Neats!

I have actually seen a real Nauga that came from one of the Naugahyde
farms. I even held the critter in my hand for a while once. Then the
little bastard bit me so I drop kicked him. Then I picked him up and he
was much better behaved. He never bit me again. They are quite rare
critters in the wild. Oh yes, his name was Norrie. No one would tell me
if there was any significance to his name. He allegedly had a girlfriend
but she left him. It was rumored that she just didn't like the noises he
made when he would do the nasty with her. I think she was kidnapped by a
band of Danish style seatcovers. The whole thing was rather disturbing.
