Why are we so special that we are the only country in the world that is
    considering them?

FWIW I think the front number plate scheme is a political diversion.
The various lobby groups have probably become a pain in the arse to
whoever for whatever reason so they have created a distraction.

All the bike groups spend time and resources on something that is
almost impossible to implement while the gov of the day pushes thru
its real agenda, whatever that is (there could be no agenda, perhaps
the gov wants to do nothing, or perhaps they are waiting for something
from the community worthy of attention).

Lights on was a similar thing...sure lots protested and good for them,
thats democracy, but plenty others did not care. But most importantly
to the gov it kept people distracted for a good decade...

Loud pipes, motorcyclists are a very small portion of the community,
its a loosing battle in a democracy, most likely it lands on the
engineers desk, the engineer who knows what a decibel really is, and
he says thats not the way it works...his/her recommendation: there is
no reason that bikes should be not be the same as cars with respect to
    emmissions.

Then you will all have to pony up for catalytic converters....they are
fitted to bikes sold in other markets, there is no reason not to have
them, why are "we" getting preferential treatment will be the gov's
    argument?

Yeah, I know I'm full of it, but come-on where are they going to put
the licence plate without it being dangerous...even on my GS there is
really no place that one could be mounted safely and still be visible
    for speed cameras.

If I were making policy I would be advocating rider/driver training
(something along the lines of the German system) and TAC style
advertising. Everything else is a distraction.

    Cheers, Tim.

PS: I don't think it will be long before cars and bikes are
electronically speed limited (I don't like the idea personally), at
first it will be say 120kph, and then eventually it will be according
to the speed limit of the road your travelling on. That will create a
real stink but when the speed limit is around 110 its hard to make an
argument against it and sound credible. And heres the crunch, it will
be pushed by the insurance industry so that the pols don't have to
    take the heat.

What do catalytic converters have to do with noise levels ?

    They lower them.

A modern R-series BMW will sound a lot noisier with a cat-replacement pipe
and end-can than with an end-can and the original pipework including the
    catalytic converter.

<Sigh> I love snips out of context.

A cat isn't a noise abatement device. They do create a minor reduction in noise
level through the fact they are slightly restrictive, but that's not the point -
read his fucked up logic where he thinks mufflers and cats are the same thing
and that fitment of cats is about overall noise levels.

    JL
Hint: cats are about pollution, mufflers are about noise, any unintended side
effects in the opposite way is merely coincidence

<Sigh> I love people who make statements then dissociate themselves from
    them.

You asked about correlations between catalytic converters and noise, not
about catalytic converters and emissions. They lower both. One is an
intended consequence, one is a by-product.

Want some chocolate, JL? My wife swears by it at certain times.

Nothing. I suggested bikes could have to adhere to car emmisions
standards, and that would include both noise and exhaust gases (think
farts, noise and smell, cats fix the smell).

Unlike 15 years ago, today there is no technical reason why bikes
cannot meet the same standards car w.r.t. emissions - they already do
    in other markets.

My theory is if you push the gov over noise they might figure that out
and then the "party" will be over.

<grin> Pissoff Conehead. There was a context to that statement and you know it,
and you also know that cats are not primarily intended as a noise muffler
anymore that steel wool is - yes it can have some muffling effect, but....
Which is what I said above, and it was a farking rhetorical question intended to
point out that he was missing the point of what cats are intended for, you being
    deliberately obtuse man you !
Bugger off you old fart :)

In Canada, the cars don't have front numberplates.
Watch any canadian movie, and you'll see what I mean. Whole Nine Yards for
    instance.
