Just got my first speeding summons in about 15 years (55 in a 30). Thought
those speed cameras didn't work on bikes?
Anyone know what sort of fine/points I should expect?

Well you shouyld not have been such a fuckwit and doing such a highly
dangerous sped in a 30 zone then.
Err, which ones ? Flash Gatso ? Hand held pointy ? Camera Van ?
    The magistrate ?

Serves you right. Speeding in 30 limits isn't big or clever. I go like
**** out on the open road, but stick to the 30 limits, which I think are
appropriate for the conditions in built up areas, and fairly policed.

Pay your fine and take the points like a man

Read the fecking post you pompous wankers - I'm not moaning or whining - I
don't make a habit of it. And don't tell me you've never blipped the
throttle on a wide open urban dual carriageway to get out of trouble when
some fuckwit of a car driver is trying to kill you because I'll just call
    you a fucking liar.
You are so quick to judge ain't ya.

    Possibly dangerous.

What about the 30 limits you don't think are appropriate? maybe this was
    one of them.
I didn't see him suggesting that he'd do anything but this; he's only
asking what the fine is likely to be!

Wasn't directing the previous rant at you but trying to kill me is not that
far off the mark - flooring his accelerator from the lights and then moving
    alarmingly into my line

  11. I make no comment about dangerous other than that you were obviously not
paying enough attention or you'd have spotted the speed trap... In the
unlikely event that the trap was both hidden and unsigned, you have the
possibility of recourse to the fact that they're not supposed to do that any
    more.

but really, 55 in a 30 is a bit of a fair cop, guv. If it's a fixed
whatsname, you're on a 60 quid and 3 points, IIRC. If it goes up before the
beak, a suitably apologetic tone and argue that there are no obvious hazards
on the road in question, if this is the case.

  12. fair comment, I think. I reckon that counts as a bite, Lozzo...

more seriously, there are rare occasions when a quick burst of [over 30] in
a 30 zone can get you out of trouble - this is one of the arguments against
the introduction of electronically regulated vehicles which won't speed.
The other, and to my mind more relevant, argument is that such systems will
make "people" (not us lot, of course ;-) even less likely to think about the
speed they're going at - they'll "know" that the car won't go over the
limit, so will happily keep their foot down waiting for it to speed up
again, safe in the knowledge that they can't be speeding.

Thus spake YTC#1 unto the assembled multitudes:
Give the guy a break. 55 in a 30 is of course very naughty, but nowhere
has Rick actually protested his innocence, and a first ticket in 15 years
isn't bad, which means either that he's normally law-abiding and careful
(like most of us) or that he's been getting away with it (like most of us ;-)

I keep to 30 in a 30 (which is sometimes a pain) but on the open road I
don't usually hang around. It depends entirely on traffic conditions.

I make no comment about dangerous other than that you were obviously not
The letter says excess speed 30mph (portable) - does that mean a handheld
    device?
Sums it up - the road is a strip of dual carraigeway approaching the
Tesco/Skimpot roundabout in Luton. It was a bright clear day - and the only
traffic around was the dark blue car trying to tailgate me. Hopefully he got
done as well (if he wasn't holding a speed camera).

If it were, then the OP should have kept his eyes open for cameras if it
looked a bit dodgy. Councils do this with some urban dual-carriageway
roads, it's how Champ got caught out a couple of years back in Leeds.

Thankfully, there are very very few of those in my area, and as I know
where they are, I ride or drive accordingly. I have alot more of a
problem with 40 and 50 limits being posted on rural roads that are not
known blackspots, such as the northern section of the B660 towards
Kimbolton that is now a 50 limit. All the deaths on that stretch of road
happen on the southern section that is still a 60 limit. The speed limit
changes are usually followed up by some mobile camera's day out in the
    country a few weeks afterwards.

In 25 years of riding I have only picked up one speeding offence in a 30
limit at 45 mph, and I was still in my teens then. Urban areas are
swarming with the police and mobile/static speed cameras, anyone who
gets nicked for speeding in a 30 limit doesn't deserve any sympathy,
they deserve to have their head checked.

Sympathy !? All I wanted was a ball park assessment of the sort of
punishment I can expect. You and YTC#1 took it upon yourselves to roll out
the moral red carpet. Like you are whiter than white. And then the frank
admission above that you are a hypocrite. You make me laugh.
In 30 years of motorcycling this is my third speeding offence. So five more
years not getting nicked and you can climb on your high horse.
Until then why don't you go and .. (I think you know the rest)

Thus spake Lozzo unto the assembled multitudes:
One day back in the 70s I was doing about 55 in a 40 limit and a police
rider on a Norton Commando came up behind me (I didn't notice him approach
because I had no mirrors - useless on the old Triumph twins). As he drew
level (with me thinking 'bugger, I'm busted') he grinned at me and waved
his hand up and down in an obvious "turn it down a bit, sonny" gesture, and
then roared off ahead. I know that wouldn't happen anymore!
