For those that can't remember that far back, I won FBOTY#2003 when I was
knocked off my Thundercat back in Feb 2003. The bike and excess were
sorted out back in 2003 but my personal injury claim has been
outstanding since. In the accident I suffered a compression fracture
to L1 vertibrae with muscle/soft tissue damage in my back. The court
appointed doc has seen me twice and has diagnosed that I will suffer
the current level of discomfort/pain for the rest of my life and will
    require ~10/12 physio sessions/life.

Well, I've just accepted their final offer that covers, injury compen,
payment for ongoing physio plus a payment for disadvantage in the labour
market. Total amount of settlement? £24K That will be a Wooooo followed
    by a Hooooo then

   )

Not wishing to piss on your bonfire, but if you are in constant pain and are
going to need physio regularly, it doesn't seem a great deal?

Better than a poke in the eye though.

I bought the Varadero to ride but I'm selling it at the mo as I don't get
out enough due to recent entwisi jnr. This lot will get invested to
hopefully make me a bigger pot of money to spend on making my life more
    comfortable.

I know what you are saying but I subscribe to the fate/'shit happens' view
on life and as such this was going to happen anyway. The cash will
hopefully go to making my life more comfortable for teh rest of my natural
    days

Well it does, and I suppose from that point of view you're absolutely right.

So what's it going to be then??

I reckon it would make my life more comfortable for the next 12 months
    :-/

Mind you, it would buy a lot of claret.

    As long as that?
    True, especially at your prices.

Off there for a holiday next Sept. Went in 2004. Quite nice country but
house prices weren't cheap by a long chalk. Unless you know different?

Indeed. Whilst it may look like a big sum right now I suspect that
would disappear pretty quickly on private treatment.

Private health insurance folks, it's the only way!
    Best form of pain relief.

Unless you're on the breadline atm no amount of investment is going to
make a huge difference. 24k really isn't that much money in todays
    world.

Property has peaked and the stock market has recovered nicely from the
    lull during the property boom.

Assuming it's enough to clear all his debts it'd make a difference
    though.

He could wake up on monday, sign on, and live a life of leisure and
    super noodles.

  18. Not with a young child and wife to support he can't. He'd need a seven
    digit number.

While I appreciate the reasoning for taking the £24k it is a very small
settlement for the potential discomfort and worsening medical risk that
is faced for the rest of his life. And that's before you consider if it
is reasonable compensation for the inconvenience and injury already
incurred. If I was the insurance company I'd be laughing all the way
    to the bank.

This is always the trouble with being offered what seems a reasonable
amount of cash when you have things to spend it on. The temptation is
so overwhelming to take the cash and pay off debts then go and buy
something you think you want that you tend to lose sight of what's
going to happen in 20 years time.

Private physiotherapy isn't cheap and it's not going to get any
better. A lot of private medical insurance schemes would count it as
an existing problem and not cover it if you change policies so you
either wait for NHS treatment or lay out your own cash. Loss of wages
due to being laid up with a fucked back for a few weeks once you've
'pulled it' doing something everyone else takes for granted need
taking into account on top of compensation for the minor pain you take
for granted after a couple of years.

I agree with Paul when he says that the insurance company will be
thinking they've got off pretty well.

Having said all that I have to admit I'd have taken the money and
blown it but I'm useless like that.

If you're *total* debt is just 24k it'll make **** all difference.
Unless as I said he's already on the breadline, but I'm certain he
    isn't.
    Bliss.
