Due to a major problem with the Hornet i just purchased (No
Compression). It has gone back to the dealer, with a full refund (which
is nice). I now have the option of a Fazer600 or a Sv650. The fazer
seems the quicker bike but the Sv looks a sturdier bike.

Anyone got any advice? except the piss taking variety.
I know the later request will be ignored.

    Fazer 600, I was well impressed with PJ's last w/e, a good all-rounder
    with an heoouuge tank range.

  3. What do you want to use the bike for?

Magpie emerged from their own little world to say
When you say full refund do you mean the dealer has given you cash in your
hand or is willing to give you the SV or Fazer in exchange?

I wouldn't fancy having another bike from the same dealer if the latter. If
you have cash then I'd look for another Hornet as its my favourite of those
    three choices.

Mined ewe, I wouldn't buy a used bike without a test ride and I think I
would've noticed the lack of compression and taken my cash elsewhere.

  5. They're both astonishing mid-range bikes. I'd reckon the Fazer to be the
more practical, and the SV (though I have yet to ride one) to be more
    fun.

    To be used for what?

Commuting, touring and general fun - Fazer
Track days, fun, weekend blasts and a bit of commuting - sv

The fazer has a really good fuel tank, it takes something like 24 litres.

Well its my first bike (not counting the hornet) so for learning on ,
and it will be a weekend bike for fun as my work forces me to use a car
    (carry lots of kit).

Id like something that will be nippy rather than downright fast, good
handling and the downright fast will come after ive learnt on this one.

The Hornet didnt have loss of compression when i test drove it , its
just developed and the garage have given me a full refund (its a mates
garage). Still dont know the cause of it as id only done approx 80miles
on it since i got it.

They dont specialise in bikes they took it i pex for a car and offered
me a great deal, to be honest theyre as peed off as i was.

I used to be a machanic, many moons ago when fuel injection didnt exist
apart from the way expensive cars, so i would have noticed a loss of
compression myself and indeed did when it happened, like the bike having
no power and backfiring like a shotgun.

This is why im buying from a dealer rather than private , untill I
really get a hang of what im doing with these two wheeled brown trouser
    machines.

I went for the SV and it'll fill those criteria happily. Only thing
that lets it down is the poxy 16 litre tank. Gives 90 miles if
    thrashing and 120 if cruising.

Blimey! I've never had the warning light on before 100 miles. 120 is

Who needs a 200 mile tank when you only have a 100 mile arse?

Who mentioned arse? Do you know just *how sore* mine was after doing
Sedan to Lydiate in one day?

    Effing painful, it was.

The lager helped to relieve it though, just a shame it wasn't Chimay
    that was on offer.

  19. Depends on the year, original was 18L, then it went to 20L and IIRC is
now 22L. The newest have a different engine (ex R6 instead of TC)
don't know what effect if any that has on the range.

  20. Try & ride both to see what you think.

Fazer has, reasonable range 150 - 180 miles, easier power delivery
than some of the more focused UJM 600 machines. Also shite lights at
least the original version[1], rather high pillion pegs on early
versions which leads to a whining noise from the rear after about 100
    miles or so.

[1] There's an unused dip that can be wired in easily but IMO the
lights are still shite even with the mod.
