The Daily Mail today reported a Shropshire policeman
being nicked for 159mph in a Vauxhall Vectra.
What sort of plod Vectra does that sort of speed?
Why am I reading the Daily Mail?

One clocked by dodgy plod 'safety' cameras?
To see just why you don't hang out with the cunts who actually *buy* it?

For once the Mail appears to have it right.
A tuned one, I read somewhere.
That is a far more serious issue. You'll find that "The Sun" is softer
    _and_ more absorbant.

The Shropshire Star says it was a GSi.

Funniest thing is the video footage that incriminated him was taken from the
    very car he was driving!

Jus like the Met fella the other day - he got reported by the people viewing
in-car video as they'd gone past a fatal and the investigators wanted to
review the tape to see if it had anything relevant to *that* case on it....

It his sort of thing becoming a common theme? There was an incident
reported recently whereby some thugs broke the glass surroundings in an
inner city off-licence, it was reported to the police as it was
    occurring.

Now, the incident was being video-taped. The police eventually arrived
(presumably after finishing off their doughnuts or something) and
informed the victims of the crime to view the tape themselves, and even
to go and interview the perpertrators of the crime too! Now, such a
slapdash sort of attitude when a complaint was made about how the case
was responded to by the force concerned would obviously be derided as a
bit of hysteria on the part of the victim.

The upturn to the event was that not only did they have a video
recording, they also had an audio recording and every comment made by
    the responding officers was recorded.

Strangely enough, they are now on desk duty awaiting the outcome of the
investigation into their handling of the situation.

The comment in the paper I read this morning says that his statement in
    court went something like :

"I was assessing the capabilities of the vehicle. I drove as fast as I felt
like - why shouldn't I? I assessed the situation and did not endanger
anyone. During training I was encouraged to drive at 145mph regularly"

He is apparently Class 1 trained, though even so, why "appropriate speed" is
okay for plod but not anyone else I don't know.

Because he's class 1 trained and your average steering-wheel-sawing
jockey isn't? I'd suspect his training makes it likely that his
"appropriate speed" is higher than your average 17 year old Kev. Also
he is probably more aware of what appropriate is, and likely to stick
    to it.

Yes - but is 159mph ever appropriate in today's speed obsessed culture?

AFAIK that is (or at least til recently was) pretty much the routine brief
    for their bikes -
As 'refreshers to keep their skills up they would go out for a real burn and
it was regarded as right and proper. Which TBH it was. My carp isn't why
should they ... its why not for others who have the skill?

Engage bleedin obvious mode ... Yeah we can have a big argument about so
who decides who others have the skill, but that in't the fkn point. The
point is the *principle's* not accepted. And that's irrational. Which is
about as much news as saying oh look gravity just stopped my desk falling up
    off the floor but ....

    SPEED KILLS

We've been into this often. Speed doesn't kill but if you integrate
or differentiate it, the results can kill.
Integrate velocity and you get position:
"He died because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time."
Differentiate velocity and you get acceleration, which is pretty high
and rather lethal when you ride into a brick wall.

Are you suggesting there's a shortage of roads in Shropshire where one
    can do 159mph?

Sounds like a challenge to me...

Unfortunately the best roads for straight-line max speeds are punctuated all
too frequently by slurry-strewn entrances to fields and farms - or are too
    bumpy.

I prefer[1] to get my kicks on Shropshire & Mid Wales' plentiful twisty
roads where one doesn't even have to trouble the speed limit too much to
    have have fun.

*Relative* speed is where it's at, in my book.

    [1] ok, 'preferred' - I haven't ridden a bike in 12 months.(
