FAOK - PDA's

I'm looking at the possibility of a PDA for carrying around with me for
recording service work, travelling details, running some specialist
thermodynamics software and for storage of some technical manuals as
pdf's to save carrying bulky handbooks around.

I've had a dig around and some PDA's seem now to have 4" screens that
would be a plus when viewing files. I'm not bothered about phone, GPS
and the rest. I am not that keen on the Palm TX as Palm seem to have
given up on them, the support seems to be poor and reliability seems to
be iffy even though the OS is supposedly more efficient.

There seem to be issues with the OS software freezing and stuff needing
resets although the latest Windows software seems to be better from what
    I understand.

Robustness is important rather than looks as it is an engineering
    environment.

    TIA

    Dell Axim?

There's many around going cheap since Dell dropped them.

Both that and the Dell are hardly robust.

I hear that some suffer digitiser problems. I read one comment to the
effect that HP don't cover the digitiser in the warranty and you are
looking at £100 for a replacement even if it dies a couple of months
    after buying.

I do know the names of manufacturers. I just want some real user
experience from people who actually are out in the field and not just
sat at a desk or swanning around a shop.

For Cab, I did look at the Motorola website and they seemed to be all
singing \ dancing machines as well as designed for real work. I could
really do with a less bells and whistles machine as I don't need
scanning capability for example or to communicate with anything more
than a PC. The PPT8800 seems closer to my needs.
