Fan of New York?

  1. Then try to catch a rather excellent programme on BBC4 called Lighting
up New York. Great review of New York's recent history, challenges and
    developments.

Repeated later tonight - 01.45 I think. Part of the American Visions
    season.

Unfortunately that fails to impress, given the answer to your original
    question is "No"

  3. So have you been to NYC and then concluded you didn't like it or are you
    judging from afar?

The series of programming looks like the sort of thing the BBC does very
well indeed - there is something on each evening at about 22.00 plus
shorter programmes about "who runs America" later in the evening. The
one on the FDA last night was also interesting.

On my one and only trip to NY, I can say I loved it. It was very
European for a Merkin city, IYSWIM.

  5. Managed to catch the 0145 showing and quite enjoyed it. If I ever move
away from London, I think I could quite settle in New York - and if
himself gets his own way, that could well be on the cards!

  6. Having been there and visited some of the areas featured I could agree
    or disagree with the comments being made. Made it feel a bit more real;
also made me want to go back.

Not sure if NYCTA would employ ex London Tube drivers on the subway!

  7. I don't know how true it is, but I've been told that I could walk
straight into a job there as they like us and our safety culture . And
c$70,000 pa isn't too bad as a salary.

  8. I did at one point consider applying to work with NYCTA and I knew an ex
LT person who was working out there on a big project. The real problem
(for a UK citizen) is that to gain a work and residency permit you need
to demonstrate you have unique skills and would therefore not be
depriving a US citizen of the job. Fantastic person that I am I could
    not quite meet that test!

I'm not sure that particular test has changed and I'm sure other
Americans could learn to drive a subway train.

  9. I knew this, but then I was also told that in the case of something like
drivers, MTA will happily sort all this out as they are constantly
short. I just wish I could remember who told me all this now!

Still, it's likely to be another of those 'might have been' occasions in
life (like living in London nearly was!)
