It's like a disney cartoon bikers cafe - you'll probably love it.

The Cat and Fiddle in Derbyshire is far better imo.

He's planning on going to Wales too, so one assumes he's not put off by
the thought of sheep shit on his various appendages.

Forget John o Groats, it has no redeeming features (except I lived nearby).
The East coast road (A9) is a heavily policed POS.

Visit Edinburgh, it's a beautiful city.
    Cross the Forth road bridge
    A985 to Kincardine
Up to the A84 to Callendar then Lochearnhead.
    A85/A82 to Fort William
You can visit the Isle of Skye from there
Follow the little West coast road to Cape Wrath.

You will have entered biking heaven by then. Unmolested by Plod.

    Choices from there are either:
North coast right along to Scrabster and take the ferry to Orkney (worth a
    ferry trip)
Or cut down the A836 from Tongue or A897 at Melvich and head for Inverness.
Down the side of Loch Ness back to Fort William
Down the side of Loch Lomond to Glasgow.

There probably isn't a better tarmac biking experience in the world with
even a modicum of decent weather.
Happy to assist further. Actually a little UKRM outing up that way has been
long discussed. As long as no camping is involved.

There's nothing straight in Wales. That includes the sheep.

Indeed. The most heavily policed road in Europe, allegedly.

and Plod uses some rather fast vehicles so it isn't easy to escape. It's
    utterly boring anyway.

+1 to Skye. It's one one my favorite places in the UK.

Even the (horrible) hotel is closed so what feature does it have? A name I
    suppose.
Wick is an awful dump populated by pikey/blackface crossbreeds.
Given the closure of Doomreay I doubt Thurso is a place to visit either. It
    was never much.
I think my route covered all the places you might want to go.

Yeah I did include it on the itinery. The Distillery tour is a must do.
Orkney has the Highland Park distillery BTW, another great whisky, as well
as Skara Brae and the Viking sites.

    Better get it written now
Sounds like what we had to pay for 2 months in the USA.

Insurance and petrol just cost what they cost when on a trip. But try
Carole Nash, they may be able to help.

Also check out Horizons Unlimited (http://www.horizonsunlimited.com) as
there will be someone there who has done it recently.

+1. Although personally I'd include John O'Groats and Dunnet Head,
seeing as I was already up there. And I'd do the Inverness-Glasgow
(Edinburgh )stretch through the Cairngorms via Speybridge, Ballater
and Braemar. Come to think of it, I'd actually do the whole route in
reverse - i.e. anticlockwise from Edinburgh.

I suppose I'm slightly biased having lived there and ridden the roads for
years. Dunnet head is cool. Riding Dunnet sands on a big traillie is cool.
In finite time I'd give the whole East coast a miss though.

I still have no idea why anyone goes to JoG

Just out of interest, if you won a few million quid tomorrow, would you
still live in the UK? Assume that any family you didn't want to leave
    would move with you.

    Because it's there?

But yes, I agree. I visited my bro and family a couple of times when
they were living in Thurso. I remember that we went to Dunnet head[1]
but I'm pretty sure we didn't actually bother with JoG. If we did then
it must have been very unmemorable.

paddle in the surf and play around[2] in the dunes.
