I reckon I must be a bit of a nationalist , although not in the National
Socialist vein, as there aren't many places I actually want to go that I
haven't already been to (and they're precious few). Pakistan, Bangladesh and
India being high on the list.

No, not really.

Petrol here is around 1.36/litre and I was getting around 1.54USD to the
GBP.

So, if you use just the exchange rate then petrol in the US would be
7.91USD.

But it was only 3.25USD.

And in Bolivia petrol was only around 25p/litre. Nothing to do with
exchange rates.

The same goes for many other items, like bananas in Ecuador, it felt like
they were giving them away. Oh, and oil, that does not do a direct
exchange price conversion, it is just cheaper

 

Prices skyrocketed a few weeks ago. It's been up to $4.25 (at the
cheapest,) back around $4 now.

It really is a complex scenario. Petrol is more expensive in Europe,
as is food, but lodging is cheaper. You can go back and forth on what
items cost more, where.

 

Still cheap

Lodging isn't cheaper, motels are better priced over your way. And
camping is about the same (except for Spain which is expensive)
