I stayed there for work once, for a couple of weeks. Had the shits
something chronic two days after arriving. Trying to piss rusty water
out of one's buttocks in the filthiest toilet (or bomb damaged hole
which is what it resembled) in the world, ain't fun.

Sorry my bad use of language - they rode in a short way but still had
a bloody long hike. Have a look at the website- I only saw 4 sections
the rest of it could have been very different

I took this same view before I set off for a 17 day trip across Europe
to Malta and back. I was broke when I left, I was even more broke when
I returned, but I didn't and still don't regret it one bit.

Crucially, unless you buy a package of some kind you can never tell how
much a trip's going to cost[1]. Set a budget and you may have to give up
and come back halfway through the trip.

Last big trip I did, the unexpected fines cost more than the fuel.

Just checked. last year's trip cost €111 per day, including everything
except airfare. Oh yeah, also excluding that one day in Barcelona when
I lost ~$2000 worth of gear in an instant. I'm just now getting around
to replacing it. Rather traumatic, that was.

In comparison, I spent one year in Africa, 1978-79, and it cost me
exactly $10 per day, including airfare.

I managed to avoid Bangladesh but I don't see it as being any worse than
Pakistan. It wasn't the country that pissed me off as much as the
corrupt filth that live there because no matter what you did in the
course of your work there was always somebody asking for a bribe before
you could make it happen. If India nukes the shit hole I'll laugh for
    hours.

We're planning on going back to SA this winter and we're shoving money
away each month so we don't have to worry about how much it costs. It'll
cost whatever we spend and we'll worry about it if we go overdrawn.

  10. Last time I was in Indonesia I took Travelan. It is a tablet you take
before every meal. Stopped me getting Bali Belly when everyone else was
    dropping like flies. Great stuff.

  11. I love knowing that somewhere at IMDB someone has a great sense of humour.

Mebbe, but it's highly unlikely judging by the stories here & elsewhere
over the years. It really has zero appeal for me.

Whichever way, there are so few traffic cops around that enforcement of
said new law is likely to pretty non-existent.

Talking about this with colleagues the other day, I decided I was being
completely hypocritical in that whilst I would love to see some of the
fuckwits I see every day done for careless or dangerous driving, the
lack of traffic cops around allows me to pretty much do what speed I
    want, when I want.

No it doesn't. Not to anyone who can read and understand. It says
"could be handed an immediate fine of up to £100". Nothing to suggest
it will demand cash on the spot. And then about the penalty points
it's much later, where they're discussing retraining and such like
    alternatives.
True, they do _mention_ them "Motorists are to be hit with on-the-spot
fines..." but I'd say the next paragraph starting with "The fixed
penalty notices..." clarifies it quite nicely.

I do wish some people would learn to read properly.

"Police to Give Drivers On-The-Spot Fines". I think most people would
interpret 'on-the-spot fine' as fines you pay on the spot. If it does
just mean a new type of un-fixed penalty notice (without points) that
you have to pay within n days, it's very badly worded.

I agree that it's very poor journalism, but then what do you expect
    from Sky News?

You seriously didn't think they would be trusting cops with cash, Did you?
I'm sure the cops don't want to be arsed with the paperwork involved in
taking money off people at the side of the road either.

Well, I always expect to be tugged for something, which is why I make
sure I have a bunch of euros in my wallet for roadside chats.

But I wasn't expecting quite that much.
