Number One Son returned yesterday evening from a long weekend at the
Children of Artemis gathering in Oxfordshire (big Wiccan bash - see
    http://www.witchfest.net/artemis_gathering.htm).

He'd trundled up there on his old 1981 Honda 250 Super Dream, last
year's £250 cheap hack purchase, with a mate on the pillion and all
the kit stuffed into the panniers, doss bags bungeed on top of one
pannier, my large four-man tent bungeed on top of the other (he'd
originally strapped it on top of the topbox, but as it weighs 10kg,
I'd told him that it would make the thing wobble something chronic and
laying it lengthwise on top of a pannier might be a better move).

Poor little bike. But that was The Doctor and I, some 30 years ago:
two-up to the South of France on a Honda CB250RS. Memories. When it's
your only bike and you're skint, you expect it to do everything.

The Super Dream, incidentally, was bought a year ago for £250. Only
10,000 miles from new, but needed new silencers and a complete
overhaul. It's now got well over 14,000 miles on the clock and the
Maintenance Fairy has made sure the oil's changed, tappets and
camchain adjusted, etc as and when necessary, and the MF also stuck a
new chain and back tyre on it a few days before he departed.

And it still sounds absolutely perfect. It just purrs and seems
totally bomb-proof. I suppose there are worse ways of living out your
two years' 33bhp purdah. That comes to an end on 16 January 2009, and
he's eyeing my Ducati. "Well, you don't use it much these days..."

    heh.

I recall taking my Z200 to Devon when I was 17, with a couple of
mates, with tent and camping kit bungied all over it. And the
following year I went to Cornwall with a bigger gnag. This time I was
on my Z400, two-up, but still camping.

Christ, it feels like it happened to someone else.

Happy days? Well, it seemed that way. I rode to, and camped out at,
quite a few racedays on my SL125, on at least one occasion (to Oulton,
    IIRC) two-up.

Weekends in the Lakes on my XT500 were a breeze by comparison.
Well you have had a bang on the head...

Why? many aspects of life feel to me now just like 1978. You are off on the
Alps run soon, better bike, more miles, same gig.

I wouldn't have thought so. I generally remember, and dream, in the
first person. Doing so in the third person indicates a hint of
    schizophrenia, IMO.

ISTR that Dodger got a bollocking from Linda because she had a dream
in which he was mean to him.

I think that would come under the heading of "screaming nightmare"

Anyway, they don't make bras and knickers in that size, do they?

    uh huh.

I'm trying to convey that distant memories feature someone who seems
quite removed from who I am now.

Mind you, when doing something and I pause to consider it, I can
almost feel myself looking down on me. I distinctly recall riding my
bike across Sydney Harbour Bridge and having this sensation.

Yeah, that much was clear. I just think it's a bit odd, but maybe it's
actually a sign that you've always been overly concerned about how
    you're perceived by others.

    <thinks>

    OK, as you were.
    Like I said, you're wierd.
