Fair price for '98 Honda CB600 Hornet, 71000kms

I am helping my wife's friend look for her 1st bike. The advert for
    the bike is below.

'HONDA CB600 1998 hornet, dark blue, new chain & sprockets, new front
tyre, full history, ventura rack, excellent condition -$6500'

Any ideas on what a fair price would be for this bike? (Relative to
other bikes for sale this bike has over double the number of kms).
Also what are there any potentially expensive components that will
need to be replaced in the next couple of services that we should
    budget for?

    Thanks in advance,
    Conrad

$ 5000-5.500 should be plenty, if that...calculate for some repairs like
    head-bearings/brake pads/ fresh brake-fluid/coolant/ fork oil etc.
guesstimating on about another grand, what's the rear-tyre like? Rego?

    cheers

$6500 or try Redbook, ummm... $5900 to $7000 private sale.
Tyres, engine, the whole bike if she loses it again.

    Sorry, couldn't resist it.

  4. That's why they're looking at one with high km's... they plan to chuck out
the shagged 600 motor and replace it with one off a CD250U. It bolts
straight in. Even the sprockets line up...

You don't mention (or the ad doesn't) how many kilometres the bike has done.

Personally, I reckon it's not a bad price.

I wouldn't sell mine that cheap.....same model same year.

Tyres are the most expensive bit of "care and feeding of Hornets".

Rear is _very_ large and expensive, and both front and rear are "odd"
sizes.....only sticky/stickier/race rubber available, no touring rubber
    at all.

OK, I'm an idiot.....didn't read the header... <shrug>

If the full history shows one owner, and that owner seems reasonable,
then fine, but, at that number of kilomtres, 4 or 5 owners would start
making it a bit expensive, in my opinion.

The Honda motor should easily handle that distance, if it is being riden
sensibly and maintained, OTOH if an owner flogged it to death (or nearly
so) then it could be less attractive.

I know of quite a few couriers getting around on 600 Hornets here in
Melb with well over 100,000km without major dramas. Tyres can be expencive,
but you should still get 10-12,000km out of the rear with normal riding, but
like any 600cc + bike, the harder you ride, the quicker the wear.
As for a fair price, Thats been covered by others.
There's riders in the U.K. with 70,000+ miles on there bikes without
    dramas.
Like any bike, as long as the service has been kept up, there should'nt
be problem with having that many km on the clock.
Check out the link under my Sig for more on the Hornet.

The history of the bike is 2 owners with a full service history. The
1st owner lived up the Sunshine Coast and did most of the kms
commuting to and from work. We will be having a look at the bike this
weekend, so if the condition and price is right she may have found her
bike (before she even lost it!).

I have done some calculations and assuming that the average kms/year
for a 600cc bike is ~6,500kms (sourced from www.kbb.com), this bike
has done the number of kms expected to be found on a 1991 bike. The
data available in the Redbook indicates most bikes depreciate at an
    average 5%-7% per year.

To calculate the value of the bike based on a km-year formula please
give me your opinions on what portion of the annual 5%-7% depreciation
is due to the kms on a bike (other factors that contribute to the
annual depreciation are typically age, exposure to the elements, dated
    design and looks etc)

    Thanks,
    Conrad

Is this how Honda-people rate bikes?
I'm impressed! (I doubt that Vulcans could do better!)

  13. Would this be an opportune point at which to raise Smee's ire by griping
about the slackarse way in which Trek screenwriters go about naming their
alien species... I remember one race being called the Klystrons,
    ferfuggsake...

Considering the kays, I'de look somewhere else and pick up something with more akin to 30,000k instead. You
could get a ZX6R '98, '99 etc for a little bit more with a lot less kays, and they're still very comfortable.
I rode mine up to brissy n back and survived (did the return trip in one day!).

Not to rate a bike, but to work out a bike's price. I would rate the
Hornet as a hellava good bike. Don't know how the Vulcans would do
it, but accountants have been using these formulas for years.
    And how did you know I ride a Honda? (a '96 VFR750)

  16. (flash back to the year 2000)
"Based on the projections made by our market analysis software, Mr Doherty,
in another three years, your Telstra stock will be worth 47 times what it is
now. We advise you to buy more."
The pompous self-righteousness you subjected us to on occasion might've
    given him a clue... :)

Yep I had One-Tel and HIH stock too!
Do you wanna' remind me of all the job-interviews I've failed and all the
    girlfriends who dumped me too?
(I only a few hundred dollars of One Tell but a few grand of HIH... I
pretty much decided that share-trading was not for me after that!)

    Sounds reasonable.

Hmmm, you aren't, by chance, an accountant, are you?

    Who me?

I go to look at a bike that's for sale....if I _want_ it and can afford
    it I buy it..... simple.

The 600 Hornet was, in some ways, a niche-market type bike. There really
isn't a new equivalent of it available...how that affects the price, I
dunno, but it makes it harder if your wife _wants_ a Hornet 600.

Yeah yeah, but you do realise that IK and I have a Green Eyed bias to uphold remember! However, yes, a Fazer
or perhaps another hornet with a few less kays would be a good idea anyway. For a little more money I think
there could be quite a gem to be found. They're out there, just have to wait around. It's hard for me not to
sell mine and go up to a ZX9R at the moment. Even though they're porky and undepowered by comparison, they're
the only litre bike in that (kind of) class that you can actually sit on for a while, hit potholes mid corner
and not fall off and commute comfortably on.

How did I change this into a ZX9R buying spree? hmmmph ....
