Big mistake. The auction start figure was waaaay to low. This makes it
hard for the bidding to get to a decent level within the time limit.

Reserves are bollocks. Set the bidding to start near enough to the
desired price and let it go. Saves everyone wasting time.

OK. Well, if he doesn't make that on the auction I'd be prepared to go
to 3.5 with none of that ebay nonsense. If he's interested he can
e-mail: ginge [at] connectia [dot] co [dot] uk and let me know.

What was it, 8k when new? now only worth half that at three years old.

What the price of the new one? around 8k, three years on 50% loss again.

Some people seem to have more money than sense.

    says...
Who gives a **** when they're getting enjoyment from it. I don't count
the cost of motorcycling, but I sure as hell wouldn't pay the over-
inflated prices that you gay people pay for Harleys. Imagine paying
that much dosh for a bike that was outdated and outclassed all those
    decades ago.

60 year old technology, that needs serious modification before it's
useable, with a price tag higher than a cutting edge sportsbike? You
    homs must be fucking mad.

The Mini Cooper S was an example of a vehicle that didn't.
I'd also guess at *some* pieces of art.

Generally you'd need to look at items where demand exceeds supply, and
that's certainly not the case for bikes or consumer electronics.

Bargain. I lost 3.5K on my last bike over 4 years and almost 40K
miles. Commuting all year round I expect running a sportsbike to cost
some money. Less than a grand per year depreciation if fine by me.

Tyres, insurance and speeding bans add to the financial pain more. I'm
not sure running a car for 4 years would be that much cheaper anyway.
Not enough to justify the boredom facotor anyhow.

The Gixxer for Auction has done 11,800 miles
if the loss is to be £ 4000 thats 33p per mile

so when you fill up (average 120 miles per tank)
add £ 40 to the cost of a tankful for depreciation

The Blackbird's dropped around £4k in six years, and I imagine the
    Wing's dropped £8k in eight.

Then you start to factor in the money that's been spent subsequent to
purchase, and the "bargain" status fades a bit.

A very few vehicles hold their value and it it's a function of
scarcity/desirability/price point. Look at the situation when you drive
an 7 Series, M5/M6 or a big Merc sportscar out of the showroom. 3000
miles later and you could have bought another decent car for the hit. I
think the Gixxer thou hold up exceptionally well. In NI a Gixxer 600
does incredibly well. As for cars there are few. The new 911 is being
booked at 70% retained @ 3x36 by leasing companies. People want it, it
has a 9 month waiting list and it falls in a lease price bracket most
    medium companies will support.

I think folk generally construct a completely inflated idea of the
*used* value of their cars and bikes. Worse in the case of bikes. Folk
use this to hide from the true cost of owning their toys. Some BMW bike
owners are really pathetic in this respect. Trying to think of the worst
example, probably high street jewellery, 50% when you walk out the door
and 75% once you wear it.
