I had a large multiband scanner while I lived on top of a hill overlooking
the Clyde Valley. This was when Cellphones were unencrypted analogue and
there were few about. The less than graceful slide of human society was all
    too evident!

It was also rather useful for listening to the rival Courier/Transport
companies. It didn't take long to build up a list of their customers for the
    sales team to visit )

Indeed. It's not until you use one of these beauties that you can see
    the opportunities ;-)

There aren't any analogue cellphones about. The UK E/TACS networks (at
least on the mainland) were shut down around 2000/2001.

  6. I was hearing stuff which I assumed to be cellular activity around 900
MHz only a few months ago. I didn't stay on that frequency long enough
to be sure but I suppose it could have been some old 934 CB pirates.

    Cheers for the info

I think one of the early (illegally imported) cordless standards (CT1?)
operated in the 900MHz band which was why it wasn't licensed here; the
US have a different band-plan to us.

Well we were talking about private radio channels albeit unencrypted
analogue. We were in no doubt that listening in was *naughty* (1). I drove
one particular company slightly scatty by listening for juicy and urgent
jobs from some busy shared customers. Some of our better known couriers
would *drop by in the passing* just to see if anything was going and the
    receptionists would switch the job.

Our company was formed before the airwaves became congested and we gained
sole use of the frequency throughout central and east Scotland bar a small
taxi firm in Kincardine. It was probably worth as much as the company! From
my house sitting at 800ft and West of Glasgow I could talk directly to my
office in Edinburgh with a car kit PMR.

    (1) however neither exists today so I'm <strains> coming clean. Ah, that's
    better

Wasn't there some 'sting' that involved false police messages about
aliens and those that turned up to see the little green men were
    arrested. (By JP, probably).

Or is it an urban legend?

    Champ :
So we have full permission to listen in to your mobile phone
    conversations then?
