    One of the token block stations (railway signalling method; at Welshpool
    IIRC) had an old trumpet and earpiece type phone. We were in the habit
    of using phones whilst looking at the signalbox about 1/2 a mile away.
    The signalman would say, in a resigned voice, "Speak down the trumpet
    driver".

    They shortened the wire in the end.
