I've heard a couple of reportsof things going badly wrong upon installing SP2
on win xp pro in networked environments.

    Any anecdotes or informed opinions?

And there was me thinking you were going to trade in the Matchless for
    Honda's fine V twin.

If I was looking for a v twin it'd more likely be an ST2

Apart from the crappy firewall, no issues with either my own PC, or those
of my clients that have been upgraded.

OTOH a friend who writes bespoke software has had some issues with popups
    and so on.

I've had one machine that reboots constantly because of ACPI issues with the
BIOS , another that claimed to be working fine but would no longer support
the network card , and about 30 that all worked fine.
Neither of the problem machines required a re-install of windows as SP2
could be removed on the one , and the NIC card swapped on the other

Generally it seems OK, however there is a theme problem that causes
problems for Turnpike - at the moment I have to run in "classic" theme
until the fix appears. I also have some problems with my Hauppauge
    WinTV.

Nothing annoying enough to make me move back as yet.

It can sometimes be fun trying to get pop-ups that you want these days,
as I think I've got about 5 or 6 apps busily blocking one after the
    other.

    Both running XP Pro:

    Desktop PC - No problems

Dell inspiron Laptop: Fucking nightmare. Right-clicking any file caused
explorer to lock up, then the Dr Watson debugger itself locked up. End up
having to kill explorer and the debugger in Task Manager, then restart
    explorer.

When the time comes to do a format/reinstall on the laptop[1], I'll try
putting it on at install time, before anything else. It'll probably be ok
    then.

[1] Typically about once a year, usually has a nice effect on performance.

It's an annoying piece of crap. If you know your way around computers it
will just bug the hell out of you. Windows in nag mode. It's so bad, have
to use it in work you see, that after having only played around with Linux I
am now a big fan of Fedora Core 3 and use it almost exclusively at home.

It's good for newbies and those who don't want to get too technical and I
advise them to go for it every time.

Really? How odd. I installed it, turned the firewall off because I
already have one, and haven't seen it since. Oh I lie, it asked me if
I'd let one site run Active-X controls.

tallbloke bored us all completely to death with wittery prose along the
    lines of:
I've had no major problems at all on both the work PC and the home PC.

The only nag I do have, is that when I do a hotfix update that requires
a reboot, and I say "no, do it later", the system does the reboot
automatically later on, if you're not actively using the system (as in
physical actions). It doesn't appear to give a shit about the fact that
I have running apps doing file conversions, etc.
