Any recommendations for a firm who can refurb a monoshock?
What make is it? I've rebuilt Hagon, EMC Dynamics/Quadrant monoshock units successfully. These use standard off-the-shelf rod seals. You do need very good quality C-spanners and correct peg-spanners to strip them down though without damage. Many Kawa units are also rebuildable, espcially the KX/KDX units. It also helps to have the correct oil type/qty/grade spec too. JB
Marzocchi. From my Guzzi Quota. I've taken it to a long established small motorcycle shop specialising in off roaders. He said he could do the job for me for a very reasonable price so I've left it with him.
(The Older Gentleman) wrote in I've always thought this was trite bullshit. Sometimes you get less than what you've paid for because you're also helping to provide the MD with a new Jag.
It's a cliche, agreed, but bullshit it isn't. As a general rule of thumb, spend more = get a better product. Sorry, but it's true. I'm sure your local man can fit new seals to a shock: it's not rocket science. But Maxton will look at your weight, riding style, etc and adjust damping rates and also spring rates if you want them to. For that, you'll pay more.
(The Older Gentleman) wrote in Well yes, to a point. What if you can get the same product for 20% less from another source? Services are harder to compare, but by going local I've also saved the postage costs. He asked me my weight, the weight of my pillion, and my camping kit!
Very wise move. Offroad shops probably do about 3 or 4 a week of various monoshock rebuilds. Bloke at our local mx dealers showed me the ropes as it were. Also lent me the special tools to copy whcih was handy. cheers, JB.
Well it'd be harder to sell with a bouncy shocker, so I'll sort it out and ride it around for a bit to make sure it's ok. ;-) Still need to sell though, so if you know anyone who admires yours and wants one with lots of good mods let me know.
Sadly, I know of no one. I've had the odd "never seen one of these before! I quite like it" conversations but none recently - in all fairness she's getting a bit scruffy.
The Older Gentleman says... My Maxton shock is beautifully built. It's a crying shame it's made for someone about 4 stone heavier than me who mainly did trackdays. I must send it back to Maxton, when I get the original shock here, and have it reworked to suit my weight and riding style.
