IMNSHO it's not the cc that matters it's the weight of the bike.

I'd still buy an ER6 over the XJ or an 80s GSXR though (not that any of
the 3 or on my wish list)

    JL
(which means I think the XJ is a bad idea but IIRC the 85 gixxer is pre
them getting porky so might be fine (for shitty 80's handling versions
    of fine))

Depending on how you define midrange then yes you are definitely right.
The stats I've been watching show that the top end of property prices in
the city (east coast capitals) have been hammered, the mid range is
wobbly (volatile) and the low end is picking up from a low base
particularly the outer suburbs where they took a huge hammering when
interest rates went up in 06/07.

Boxer this is your turf, what say you ?

Holiday houses in short driving distances (<2hrs) from Sydney above half
a mill have been most affected - the further above 500K the harder the
hit. The example(1) referred to above was on the South Coast of NSW I
forget the town - bought 18months ago for $1m-ish
    sold 4months ago for 500Kish - ouch !! A "motivated vendor" :)
Would seem unlikely, I'd suggest more that those with big enough calls
to need to liquidate houses are probably selling assets out of the top
end of the holiday house market. Those with smaller calls would be the
ones selling boats and other luxury toys (lot more ferraris and AMG
mercs and etc available all of a sudden as well). Those with seriously
big calls were liquidating their main residence (and there's been a some
of those go on the market in Oct/Nov too...coincidence ? Perhaps.)

Take all of the above with a grain of salt, I'm weak in property - not
    really my thing.

Amazing isn't it. You wonder where they get their selling prices from.

BTW why did you buy another bike which is pretty much exactly the same
    genre/niche ?

My experience in Brisbane is that prices have fallen by about 10% for low to
mid range homes ($300,000 to $450,000) over the last 6 months, the upper
level above $650,000 in the Greater Brisbane area a little more. South East
Queensland has an undersupply of housing and very low rental vacancy rates
so these factors are underpinning prices. I expect further drops when
unemployment levels get above 6%. The increased first home buyers grant has
underpinned the lower market further that is homes below $450,000.

I just got back from a month in the USA where things are dramatically
different, over the past 3 months 45% of their property sales have been
below the mortgage payout figure. They have an oversupply of property, a
high rental vacancy rate of 15-20% and non recourse home loans.

I expect this market downturn in Australia to last another 2 years before
another rise in prices, so over the next year or so many bargains are likely
    to become available.

  6. Erm, prior to the Ulysses, he had a Blackbird. Before that, a ZX12.
Before that, another Blackbird, and before that, a third Blackbird.

Yeah, I know, but he right now still has a Ulysses, and he's just
bought a bike which to me is functionally identical. To me it was like
owning an 08 R1 and then buying an 08 ZX10 - hence why was I curious
    as to why...

I had one as a loaner for 2 days when Fritz was in the shop for
something. Was a fantastic (if scary) ride considering I had about 5
    months experience under my belt..

The XJ, the 80's gixxer of the ER6 ?

    JL
ER6 *shouldn't* have been scary for a learner - it only barely misses
the LAMs HP/weight cutoff and I'd be surprised if the power curve was peaky

Fair enough ! I can rarely say that, so I can see how that would be a
    good thing ;-)

Does that mean the Ulysses is for sale ? Or are you keeping both ?

We on about the same bike ? I'm on about a 600cc faired sportsbike
compared to a 250 naked. As far as comparisons go, my LAMS-OK GT250 is
    28(.5!)Hp and 155kg (1:5) dry vs 86 and 170 (1:2).
    The ER6F:
    Wasn't mine.
    Did 60+ in first
Accelerated as fast as you could twist the throttle

I thought it was the.... errm ....."touching the ground" that was the reason
    you kept getting new bikes.

A XJ wouldn't be scary (although this particular one is frighteningly-good
    value!)

86 HP from a 600 twin in a mild state of tune - colour me awfully
surprised - is that off the kwaka website ? I seemed to recall the
number being about 45-50hp when I read the review. And no, an ER6F isn't
a "faired sportsbike" in my definition - that would be the ZX6.

72 HP and 178kg according to the Kwaka website
    http://www.kawasaki.com.au/index.ph...ry=5&product=6&product_details=specifications

And that's going to be at the crank... still more than I thought though
    - has there been a recent update ? Didn't the ER6F used to be half faired ?
<shrug> Fair enough - it's still only a bit more than many LAMs bikes
and the ER5 (LAMs legal) had a very learner friendly power delivery -
given the original ER6 release was only a rebore of the old motor (IANM)
in a better frame I wouldn't have expected it to be too unfriendly

  20. You are, unfortunately. The EX650 motor shares absolutely nothing with
the old EX500 unit that used to power the ER-5, the KLE500 and,
    originally, the GPz500S

(cue dark mutterings about Kawasaki needing to get their finger out
and develop an ER-11 to mix up their range a bit and pick up VTR1000
sales now that Honda will stop making them)

Correct on all the other fronts. The ER-6 is about as intimidating as
a labrador, and with its chassis spec, it'd need to travel back in
time to the early 80's before it could be considered a sportsbike.
