Extraordinary Statistic

This is a quote from Saturday's Telegraph, relating to motorcycle
accident statistics in the recently released DfT statistics:

"Interestingly, female riders currently make up about 20 per cent of
the total ridership, yet they represent more than 80 per cent of the
    fatalities."

This seems too extraordinary to be true. I've had a look through the
DfT report itself, and I can't see any breakdown of accident
statistics by gender, never mind any other information to enable the
    above conclusion to be drawn.

Is anybody aware of any information that might suggest that this is
true? Or, more likely, is there anybody more adept with statistical
data that could speculate how this conclusion could be incprrectly
drawn from the data in the Report?

Are they using the term rider to include pillions?

Pillions tend to be female and tend to come off worse in a major off.

As to where they get their gender specific data - "somewhere" but other
    than that I don't know.

How did you read the report? It has not been published yet according to the
Times story. The are quoting soundbites from a DoT press release (which
does not appear to be on their website yet.)

From the last paragraph of the Times story:
"This is an intriguing correlation and while at this stage nothing much can
be deduced from the raw data, the Department of Transport's full report
should clarify matters when it is published later this year."

So WAIT, you may get an answer in the actual report.

  9. The film wasn't bad, actually, but typcially bad at predicted
in the future in a 70's way. But I don't really think it's meant
to be a funny sig though.

Oh I dunno, other than the odd stylistic flourish, the film was bloody
awful. It barely even grasped the basic concept of the book.

Females are generally pillions, and pillions always seem to come off
worse. Possibly because pillions, unlike riders, don't spend huge wads
of cash on gear, and possibly because they get launched harder in the
    event of a crash

The way that report's worded, however, suggests shite journalism. No
    surprise there then...

That's not really a surprise though, is it?
