Extended Warranties on Used Suzuki Intruder

Discussion in 'Motorbike Technical Discussion' started by Patrick Dugan, Jul 10, 2005.

  1. I am buying a used Suzuki Intruder VS1400 year: 2003. The bike is being
purchased from a dealer. The dealer is offering an extended warranty for
the bike for $800 for two years. Are these warranties worth it?

  2. I tend to think not. Let's suppose you buy it and never use it. You
are out 800 clams. Suppose you buy it and DO need it for a repair that
would cost 350 clams if you had to pay cash. You're still out 450
clams. Buy it if you want it for peace of mind. But remember that
dealers are in business to make money, not provide you with peace of mind.

  3. No.

    It's a low-mileage Japanese bike.

    1. It's very unlikely to go wrong

    2. If something does go wrong, the chances are that there'sd some
exclusion clause in the warranty that means it won't apply.

    3. If something does go wrong, the chance of it costing 800 bucks is
    remote.

Dealers love extended warranties because the commission on them is
excellent and it doesn't cost the dealer anything. He makes about 30%,
and he doesn't even have to buy anything first as he would if he was
    selling any accessory.

    For 800 bucks, it's a complete rip-off. Avoid.

  4. Agreed. Deductible prevents the insured rider from getting anything
minor fixed, and if anything major happens, the $tealer$hip shop
manager will try to shove the machine out the door with half-assed
repairs so the shop can get back to making money off of minor
    repairs...

I bought two extended warranties and never had occasion to recover
    anything on the expense...

  5. Thanksd for the opinions. I was suspicious that it wasn't a good deal
and this just confirms it. The bike didn't come with a warranty already
since it was used and 2003. It only has 5000 miles on it so I consider
it fairly new. The bike is sold "as is." the "extended" warranty is
basically a new warranty or insurance policy.

  6. If you think that $800 would be a reasonably good deal for insurance,
you must have $800 that you can spare. Open a savings account with the
$800 in it and just leave the money there until something happens to
the engine that requires you to take the money out of the bank. Or, if
nothing happens that needs a lot of money to repair, you have $800 to
    spend on your next motorbike...
