Expensive?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Whinging Courier, Aug 27, 2003.

  1. I've found out where all that oil was coming from.

My Bandit's pulse generator cover was punctured by the engine bars
collapsing and it's taken the oil pressure switch with it, stripping the
whole thing out, including the thread, which is nice.

Now, do I get it repaired or flog my bike for spares or repairs?

If anyone wants to make me a sensible offer to do either (repair it for
me or buy it) I'm open to offers. Beer tokens available for the person
that can get that switch back in!

Whinging Courier was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
Get another engine from another bent Bandit?
Well, one[1] could probably helicoil it, but I'd be worried that the
swarf from the drilling/tapping required for this would get into the
    engine.

[1] i.e. I'd pay someone to do it.

Not an option. Too expensive, I'm afraid :-(
Indeed. I offered the job to the shop down the road but they were less
than interested. I'm leaning towards flogging it for spares or repairs.
I'm not really in any fit state to ride a bike for a while and I'm going
off to do the vans. If I can get it fixed cheaply and professionally
it'll make someone a great winter hack. It's got a few dings here and
there but has been utterly reliable.
If I can't get it fixed in the next week or two I'm off to the Gadget
Shop for a digital camera and I'll be offering it for sale :-(

    Chemical metal YKIMS

It does. Could I get away with smothering the stuff round the old oil
pressure switch and pushing that in the hole effectively making a bung,
a sort of puncture repair for engines, if you will?

Try it, what's the worst that could happen?

.... oil pressure switch falls out at speed and copious amounts of oil
spray on to the front wheel causing loss of control which results in
skidding into a petrol tanker head on, which veers off the road into a
primary school playground during the annual 'all UK inter school
    sponsored picnic event' ........

I'll give it a go. It sounds like this chemical metal could improve my
reversing speed as I've never had oil spray onto the front wheel and
after the fun I used to have with fire as a kid, a petrol tanker sounds
    fucking boss.

Heh, at about the same rate as yours, too ;-)
AOL. Most of my spills happened at less than 30mph.
Addy Lee are bunch of miserable cunts. I raced one over blackfriars
bridge at over 100 mph and when I got to the lights the **** wouldn't
    even look at me.
76? Prima magazine and all those other Gooduns? I saw Liam Gallagher in
the Cafe opposite there and he's a miserable **** as well.
I reckon you probably half choked yourself eating it as quick as you
could to make it *look* like you got there quicker ;-)

Further on this, copied from ratbike.org:
Need to get a fastener into a bolt hole with stripped threads or one
in sheet metal or plastic where a nut can't be used for some reason?
For $2, you can get a *well nut* from Home Depot. You'll find them in
the hardware isle in the little clear plastic bins. It's a rubber
plug with a machine screw through it and metal washers at both ends.
There are various sizes, you'll want 1/2" for a oilpan drain bolt for
example. You stick it into the stripped hole, and tighten it, which
contracts the washers together and makes the rubber plug bulge in the
middle until it seals the hole. They're very effective if there's any
thread at all left; the rubber conforms into all the little grooves
with the grip-o-death. Highly vibration resistent. A good choice for
an unstressed area where normal fastners vibrate loose, like the horn
    mounting bracket.

B&Q, Wickes etc. do the same sort of thing.

Strewth, you're fatter than me! I guess it's just 'cos you're so
    small[1] overall.
Well, I said I still used imperial for height and weight - should have
mentioned other bodily statistics too. In any event, I'm not likely to
forget how big an inch is anytime soon :)

[1] I'd like to say 'and perfectly formed', but that would be a
    blatant untruth, obviously.
